Re: Maternity Leave...
Im due in October and would LOVE to take the rest of the year off, but i dont think we can afford it. My health insurance will cover up to 12 weeks, then after that I have to pay Cobra which is a lot of $$$. I am entitled to 8 weeks and can use up to 40 accumulated sick days, which I will take.

Re: Maternity Leave...
I'm taking maternity leave and definitely not going back. I figure why not, I'm entitled to it.

Re: Maternity Leave...
for those who are not coming back...when are you planning on telling your employers your plans?
I'm considering not coming back, but I dont know when I am going to make my final decision.

Re: Maternity Leave...

I told my boss the truth that I wasn't planning on coming back around Thanksgiving, and I'm due March 19. He and I have worked together for 7 yrs and have a good relationship, I felt confident he wouldn't screw me over.
We discussed the possibility of me returning to do some part-time work from home. I doubt I really want to do this, but it left the door open enough that it seemed perfectly reasonable to be taking the maternity leave.
We get 8 or 10 wks of full pay depending on what type of birth, then another week of paid "parental leave" that all new parents (dads as well as moms) get, and then when I resign I'll get my accrued vacation days. I had been contemplating quitting a couple months ago and giving myself the last 2 months of the pregnancy as a vacation, but I just could not pass up the paid leave.

Re: Maternity Leave...
Question, if you take maternity leave (including vacation time), and get paid for the full time, then decide not to return, do you have to "pay back" the time you used that you hadn't accrued?

Re: Maternity Leave...
I think you need to make sure that you only use as many days as you accrued, otherwise you might owe them the pay for those days. Usually your company's employee handbook will have a chart saying how many days you have accrued at various points of the year.

Re: Maternity Leave...
I told my bosses I was taking a 12 week maternity leave and would be back in August (he was born May). The only pay I got was disability through the state, my company did not pay me, although they continued to cover me for both medical and dental.
1 month before I was to return, I decided not to go back and let my bosses know then. They got in essence 4 weeks notice and then I continued to do a little work for them part time, so I got the best of both worlds.

Re: Maternity Leave...
You can't tell your employeer until AFTER you have taken your maternity leave. If you do, you are not entitled to NYS disability or any other company benefits. I know it feels dishonest but you should give your notice afterwards.

Re: Maternity Leave...
My contract says I have to give 60 days notice so I will probably wait until then. I wouldn't have to go back until Sept. since I work in a school so I was thinking of telling them by the end of June. I don't get any paid maternity leave or disability, but I would still get my benefits. I also want to keep the option of going back to work open until I see how everything works out once the baby comes.

Re: Maternity Leave...
I'm definitely not returning to work.
My DH wants me to take maternity leave b/c he sees it as extra cash in my pocket. (We don't need the benefits.) I'd rather just let them know I intend to leave. I guess I feel guilty having them believe I intend to return.

I'd feel guilty too, but if I was going to get paid I wouldn't tell them. Take what you can get! You can always say you were intending to come back, but after having the baby you realized that it's just not going to work out for you.
