Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
He weights 16lbs 7 ounces. At his last visit which was on Dec. 30th he was 16lbs. I was a little disappointed in his weight gain. Doctor didn't express concern and said he looks great. Am I not feeding him enough? He takes 4 bottles a day and has anywhere from 4-6 ounces each feeding. He doesn't have 6 all the time though. The most he'll have is 5. Then in the morning he has 2 tbsp of cereal and 3 tbsp of fruit. In the afternoon he has 3 tbsp of veggies and 2 tbsp of fruit. At night he has 2 tbsp of cereal and 3 tbsp of fruit. Is that not enough??? He doesn't drink water or juice yet.
Should I be doing something more? He did grow an inch longer. Last visit he had only grown half an inch.

I think you are doing fine. If the doctor said they are not concerned, I wouldn't be.
Did you ask the doctor all of these questions?

Re: Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
No didn't think to ask him anything since he didn't say anything at all about his weight. He just said he looks great.
16lbs 7 ounces seems kinda low for an 8 month old no?

I don't think so.
I know Ali is about that - but I will know for sure on the 14th.

Re: Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
dont get overly concerned with every ounce. again, if the doctor wasnt concerned, theres no need for you to worry.
as far as feeding kids, I never counted or measured anything. I have no idea how many bottles Luciano gets per day or how many tablespoons. I make him plenty every time and he eats what he wants of it.
if you feel Matthew should eat more, just put more food into his meals, if he keeps eating, he might just want more. as a mom, you can judge when theyve had enough. By eyeballing what I feed Luciano, I would say its a good 4tbspns or more. each time, if he's liking it, I give him more. but i dont go crazy either. their little tummies can only hold so much.
Just follow your gut. so far so good, you have one healthy and happy baby boy, looks like youre doing a damn good job to me!

Re: Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
I do the same thing....samantha (who is younger but tiny) is the same way....mathew seems fine - dh and my theory is now that samantha will catch up one day we're sure but as long as she gains even a little and never loses, she is fine - so same for mathew - if he is hungry you'd know (mother's intuition!) I am sure....every tuime we tried to give samantha more in her bottle or anything - she would drink exactly the same she used ot and leave the new amount - or drink it and spit up a little.....its as if she "shows us" for worrying sometimes I guess!
but trust me I know what it is like!

Thanks for telling me this. I just feel like i'm not feeding enough of something. The milk intake is only 4-5 oz at each feeding if i'm lucky.
It's just that when he went to the doctor on nov. 18 and then went back on dec. 30th he had gained 2 pounds and grew only half an inch now it's a month later again and he's only gained 7 ounces. It's like what went wrong there?

IS he still hungry after you give him that amount?- If he will take more than give him more- if he wont let I would say you are giving him the perfect amount!

Why would you trust US and not your ped.? If you question what your ped. has to say, then maybe it's time to look for a new one.

But RJ is having 8ounces at every bottle. Mine isn't.
I can only feed what he'll eat I guess. As long as he doesn't loose weight.

I never measured what I gave DD. Just make a big bowl of cereal and a stage 2 fruit or veggie or whatever and let him eat until he's full, he's fine.

Sometimes I feel like the more solids he has the less milk he will want and the milk is still a main source of their nutrition. Then I feel like I have to cut back on the solids but then he needs those too.
so frustrating...

Re: Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
Our Ped told us to feed her as much as she'd eat b/c they are burning up so much now that they're so active all day. So I'd say keep feeding him until he's full.

Re: Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
the girl that measured his height also said that he was 26 inches! At the last visit he was 27 and a half.
DH said "are you sure" and she was like "yes". Then DH was like "are you telling me my son shrunk, how is that possible". She said that it said in the charts that he was 25 inches at his last visit so now he grew an inch to 26. Ok first of all she read wrong but forget reading something wrong off the charts, she measured him with the tape herself. When we told her that DS was 27 and a half inches at the last visit she did it over again and said he was 28 and a half inches now. Which sounded right.
I hope she weighed him right. We did make her do it twice...

This happened to us also ..Giovanna, who is your ped? ( FM me ) I think you live in Queens, can it be the same one? I'm looking to change ped's because I'm just not happy with them at all- rushy visits, no info.
As for feedings, please don't kill yourself over this, its plain to see you are a great mom, your son is smiling ear to ear in every picture. Try giving him a bit more and see if he'll take it, be it formula or the solids. Just like us, they have days that they eat a lot and sometimes not much at all. Please don't be concerned with what "other" mothers do, you are his mom.. you know best
BTW-I won't even tell you what my son ate at 8 months and what my daughter now eats at 10 weeks.. I live in the house of porkers!

Re: Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
We've had that happen to us with the height b4 b/c the babies squirm and they get it wrong so I wouldn't sweat that too much. I also had them screw up the weight one day and I had to argue with them and then she checked and her scale wasn't calibrated correctly that day. It happens so keep on them b/c you've kept track too and you know as well as they do.

Re: Matthew went to the doctor's today and...
Oh no, I think maybe you misunderstood me. I mean they could've been wrong the last time you were there and that's why it looks like he shrank which he obviously didn't. It happened to us right at the beginning where her 1st ped visit she was shorter than her birth at the hospital not possible and then it may have happened again later on so I don't pay too much attn to the height for that reason.

It turned out he was measured wrong because he was so squirmy.
