i remember a thread about whether or not ppl leave the dryer running when they are not home & almost EVERYONE said noo def not - which i used to do, but since that thread, i stopped (thanks )
so my question is - what about leaving the house with the washer going? i feel like this is okay right?

same here...
The other day I had about 15 min left on my dryer and I said, eh..I'll leave it..what can happen (and I normally never do). I turned on the radio before I left for my dog / cats (lol) and what song was on? Burnin' Down the House
I ran downstairs and shut it off.

Re: maybe a stupid question but....
I never leave anything running (except the fridge!) when I'm not home. I also keep my coffee maker and toaster unplugged when not using it.

Re: maybe a stupid question but....
I never leave anything running when i am not home. When my washer is not being used I also have the water switched off at the main. Sometimes when I do the wash all the heavy clothes will move to one side of the washer and it makes a noise like the end of the world is happening in my basement. I have to run downstairs and untangle the towels. I would be scared of that happening while I was out

do you have one of those front loader machines? MIL has one & when we lived in our apt we used to do our wash at ILs house & this use to happen ALL THE TIME!!! the clothes would unbalance the middle part of the washer and everything would stop waiting for someone to come and balance the clothes out... it was really annoying b/c SO many times i would come back after throwing a load in & it would STILL be sitting in the washer not done

If you have rubber supply hoses, they could rupture and flood the basement. The steel braided ones won't rupture.
Any appliance has the potential to start a fire (and cause a flood if there is water involved). It can also happen with a water heater, boiler, A/C, water softener, or even standard pipes and wires. It's just a matter of how confident you are, and what type of risk you are willing to take. By tapping into the electric grid, and the water grid, our houses constantly are under some sort of threat.

Re: maybe a stupid question but....
i don't leave anything running when i'm out. i'd be afraid of a leak. i also never leave my dishwasher on either. there have been a few times when something has fallen down onto the heating coil and started melting or burning. Who knows what could have happened if I wasn't home to catch it?

Re: maybe a stupid question but....
I have left the dishwasher on , but that is about it, but I try not to do that. DH Mother's house had a huge house fire in 1994 because of the dryer. It exploded ! Thankfully no humans were hurt they all got out, but there cat died - so sad- he is still upset about it, I cannot blame him. FYI- Do not leave on the dryer when you are not home.
