Re: maybe early but what are some good first children's books to get?
I got all the "classic" story books: The Velveteen Rabbit, Guess How Much I love You, The Complete Winnie The Pooh series.
I also like the Karen Katz books, particularly her lift-the-flap books - Where is Baby's Bellybutton, Toes, Ears & Nose, etc.
I got a wonderful soft baby's first book from a friend overseas that DD loves.

Re: maybe early but what are some good first children's books to get?
We started reading to both our boys really early on. IMO, the best books to start with a short, simple books with things to touch and feel. Rhyming books are great too because you naturally read it in a sing song kind of manner, which babies really respond to. Pat the Bunny is a great classic (and there are others in the series too). I also love the Babyfaces books- they are really simple and they have pictures of real babies' faces on all the pages.
ETA: Another great thing to look for are books that talk about the body parts. I love the book Shake it Up Baby- it has a little rattle on the binding of the book and you shake it with the story.

Re: maybe early but what are some good first children's books to get?
His 1st book was The Runaway Bunny. We started reading to him at night at 6 weeks. We then got Goodnight Moon. From then on I just bought whatever I thought looked appealing. I like buying books on Amazon but for children's books I found that it was best to go to the bookstore and actually look at the books. Then I'd buy whatever I thought looked appropriate.
Where is Baby's Belly Button? was an early favorite. Books with flaps were good. Look for simple pictures. Short sentences.
With babies/toddlers I think a lot of it has to do with HOW you read the book. Do you make it sound fun? Animated? etc. My DS LOVED a book about trucks someone gave him. He didn't know anything about trucks but fell in love with the book (it started his love affair with trucks, LOL) and I think it was bc of how I read it.
ETA: It's never too early. My DS (2.5) loves books. We read several times a day and every single night. We started at 6 weeks and I think this is why he loves "reading." I am so happy to have instilled in him the love of books that I too have.

Baby Einstein First Words
This book and First 100 Words have been DD's favorites since about 11m. We go through each page and play "where's the ____" Now at 15 months she's saying a lot of the words as we play

Re: maybe early but what are some good first children's books to get?
Definitely not too early. Both mine have been listening to stories since in the womb, mainly because I'm a teacher and read to my students a lot.
Good books to start with would be: The Napping House Time for Bed Goodnight Moon Brown Bear Anything by Eric Carle Lullaby Moon Bear Wants More and others in the series Baby Einstein Books
We also have touch and feel books, alphabet books, animal books etc. DS likes to look at the pictures.

Re: maybe early but what are some good first children's books to get?
Since DC was 2-3 months old, we've been reading to him as part of his bedtime routine. He's more into them now at 9 months, but I'm glad we included it in his routine early on. Now he turns the pages for me. We love:
I Love You, Stinky Face (our FAVORITE) Dear God (prayers for little ones) The Very Hungry Caterpillar Finger Puppet book Guess How Much I Love You On the Night You Were Born Eight Little Monkeys The Peek-a-boo Book A Cuddle for Little Duck

Re: maybe early but what are some good first children's books to get?
All the recommendations so far are great!
All you really have to do is go to a children's book store (or children's area of a book store) and you'll find a whole area with books for babies. Books with lots of repetition, rhymes, and vibrant pictures - there are tons!
And, it just has to be said, that it's NEVER too early to read to your baby! That's why they suggest you start in utero.

Re: maybe early but what are some good first children's books to get?
my son liked the "touch & feel" books when he smaller. from 4 months until about 18 months ~ he enjoyed any kind of book that let him touch something fuzzy or pull open a flap, etc.
now he is into his characters. he only wants to read the books like that have sesame street or mickey mouse or yo gabba on them. all of the "classic" books i have sit on the shelf.
