Maybe you guys can help me - My dog is scratching ALOT
My dog has been scratching himself ALOT lately. To the point where he goes nuts rubbing his body on the carpet and crying. He also will be perfectly fine and then jump and start biting his body as if something bit him. He is on frontline monthly, about 2 weeks ago we found 2 fleas on him but since then we have found none. We took him to the vet on Monday and they said no worms (he was scratching alot by his butt), and no fleas. They combed him and said they see no fleas and no feces from fleas. They also do not believe its allergies bc his skin doesn't look red or irritated. So basically $95 later, they have no idea. They drained his anal glands (ewwww) but didn't think that had anything to do with it.
Anyone deal with anything like this before? I feel so helpless and not sure what to do - he is miserable. I bought some moisturizing bath for him but it didn't help.
Thanks!

Re: Maybe you guys can help me - My dog is scratching ALOT
When my dog got bit by fleas, they scratch for about 2 weeks afterwards. Maybe your dog is having an allergic reaction to the bites? My female just recently got her belly all bitten up by a mosquito (we were sure it was a mosquito). Dr gave her a cortisone injection and a benadryl injection. She was much better after that. Then they gave her a spray for the itch,I used it only 2 times and all of that broke the allergic reaction cycle she was having to the bites. So your dog is likely just experiencing a reaction to the bites. Keep checking him for fleas, remove them with a flea comb if you see them. Check for flea dirt also daily. And if you can bring him back to the vet to see if they will do an injection to break the itch cycle.

Re: Maybe you guys can help me - My dog is scratching ALOT
My dog is having a very similar issue. The only difference is I don't use a topical pesticide. I found two fleas on him weeks ago. Since then he's had a bath and still nothing. (Soap and water will kill a flea but not the eggs.) I check him daily, sometimes more than once a day, and still nothing. His skin looks great! It could be a mild allergy to the flea bites from weeks ago or something else which is why both of our dogs' skin look fine. He has eased up on the itching since the bath. I think it soothed his skin. It's a very mild all natural shampoo and then an organic conditioner. Maybe try giving your dog a bath, it could help (fragrance free). When they are biting at themselves the saliva could make them even more itchy so it's good to wash it off.

I don;t know how big your dog is but I give mine children's benadryl (the meltaways) once every 12 hours.
Mine is a 75 lb. lab if that helps any.

hershey went through something like this a while ago... same thing -- nothing was wrong with him & he was still bitting himself
i figured that maybe it was just dry skin so i bought lotion stuff from petco & rubbed it on him 2x a day & that did the trick!
