McConnell: Marjorie Taylor Greene's views are a 'cancer' for the GOP

https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/01/politics/mcconnell-marjorie-taylor-greene-cancer-republican-party/index.html

(CNN)Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on Monday issued a tacit rebuke of controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, slamming the Georgia Republican's "loony lies and conspiracy theories" as a "cancer" for the party.

"Loony lies and conspiracy theories are cancer for the Republican Party and our country," McConnell said in a statement. "Somebody who's suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.'s airplane is not living in reality. This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party."
While McConnell did not name Greene directly, his statement stands as a scathing rebuke of the freshman Republican House member. The Hill first reported on the statement.
Greene quickly shot back on Twitter, asserting that "the real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully. This is why we are losing our country."
...

He hasn't called her out by name, and hasn't done anything about what she's saying, but coming from McConnell, this is the most "backbone" he's shown in the last 12+ years...

She's very vocal, so he realizes that she *will* become the "voice of the GOP" if they don't stop her. She is, and will continue to dominate the news.

This, exactly. Her Islamo-phobic, racist, and anti-semetic views are terrifying because they have buy-in. The more of a following she attracts, the less safe this country becomes for so many.

She’s dominating the news because she’s a toxic, bat-sht crazy individual who happens to be a republican. She hardly has any kind of following outside of her district in GA.

She might be extreme but she is the rule, not the exception.

Most of the House Repub caucus is trying to oust Liz Cheney for voting to impeach while ignoring this woman's comments.

The Texas Republican Party took the Qanon motto.

The Arizona Repub party is starting its own efforts towards taking over the state's electoral votes.

Most House Repubs voted to overturn the election in at least one state, many times not even in their own.

The Republican Party is sliding more and more towards a fascist ideology very much in line with the belief in alternative facts and power at all costs.

Steve King was stripped of his committee assignments but this is a different party.

and she has trump's backing, so that means a lot within the party.... at least according to her...

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/01/marjorie-taylor-greene-trump-meeting-464462

Freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said on Monday that she would soon be visiting former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Amid revelations of more inflammatory social media posts she has made and videos she’s produced, the controversial Georgia Republican has claimed to have Trump’s backing, saying last week that the former president had called her and supported her.

Trump’s team never confirmed the call. But during an interview with One America News on Monday, Greene went further, stating that she will be visiting him in person.

"But he's doing really well,” she added. “I'm excited to go visit him soon and continue to give him a call and talk to him frequently. Great news is, he supports me 100 percent, and I've always supported him. President Trump is always here for the people, and he's not going anywhere. So I look forward to, to joining him and what his future plans may be.”

Representatives for Trump did not return a request for comment. Nor did officials currently working with the former president.
...

If his team doesn't publicly deny his support, she's going to stay in the news saying he supports her, even if he doesn't. If Greene has his support, his followers will listen to her.

Re: McConnell: Marjorie Taylor Greene's views are a 'cancer' for the GOP

McConnell can say whatever he wants, but until he puts his money where his mouth is, his statement amount to nothing more than hot air. It's a shame that the Republican party has devolved into a heaping pile of conspiracy theories and lies, but they have nobody but themselves to blame. All they had to do 4 years ago was call out Trump on his lies and hold the hard line. They chose not to. You reap what you sow.

Unfortunately, many people have lost their lives as a result of it.

The rule, not the exception? Lol. We’ll have to agree to disagree because it’s certainly not in my republican universe. She’s just a disgusting person and wrong is wrong.

If we’re lumping millions and millions of people into one basket where is the democratic outrage over openly anti-Semitic Ilhan Omar and left-wing nut Raphael Warnock? Just because I find them to be repugnant individuals I wouldn’t assume that most democrats support their views.

The article YOU attempted to post states that she apologized. That was almost two years ago and there hasn't been anything since.

We all misspeak sometimes. It's what we do about it after that defines us.

Also, can't compare the two comments. At all.

Neither of those things are true.

And this is a prime example of why these boards have just become a back-and-forth of “I’m right! No I’m right”. You say it’s not true so I guess it must be gospel.

Re: McConnell: Marjorie Taylor Greene's views are a 'cancer' for the GOP

I want to add a little more context to this.

There is a reason why this has come from McConnell and no one else.

McConnell is finished. He'll be 84 when he is next up for an eighth term and I highly doubt he'll run again.

As loathsome as I find him, I do believe he is "old school" in the sense that he has been around a while and comes from a more genteel era. He doesn't like the chaos.

It's sort of like your old racist grandpa telling your even more racist cousin to be quiet at the Thanksgiving table. He may or may not agree with him but it's besides the point; he doesn't want the bedlam and discord.

Like many soon to be retirees (see Jeff Flake and Pat Toomey) he's growing a spine because he has nothing to lose. I think he also hates to see his party split.

The rising stars see it differently. I won't repeat the examples I gave above, but I'll add an important one - McCarthy headed to Mar a Lago to make nice with 45. As the highest ranking Republican in the House that is very telling. These conversations matter especially with the timing of this one.

When I say MTG is the norm I mean something bigger than her. I'm talking about the embrace of the crazy. The detachment from reality. The insistence that Biden lost the election. The repudiation of masks that we keep hearing about from Repubs in Congress. The list goes on and on. And I'm talking about Republican leadership, not the voters, at least for the most part. There are some disturbing polls that show that the majority of Republicans insist Biden did not win the election. This I believe is one of Trump's worst legacies, as he sowed these seeds of distrust way back in 2015 - to cover himself in case he lost in 2016. It erodes the legitimacy of our democratic institutions with no merit.

Unless something changed while I wrote this post, no one with a real dog in the fight has said anything to repudiate her. I've analyzed elsewhere why I believe it makes electoral sense to embrace the crazy unless they can ramp up the voter suppression. And oh boy are they working on it.

I'm going to research organizations working to fight against voter suppression and add them here in an action post soon. Talking is nice but doing is better!

McConnell: Marjorie Taylor Greene's views are a 'cancer' for the GOP

The Republican party needs to stand up to people like this. I mean no one spoke out against Trump and all his BD early on when it was just starting. Have not been the biggest fan of Mitch, believe me but he seems to have grown a pair as of late which is respectable. If Republicans don't stand up to this kind of BS it will put the final nail in the coffin of their party. People like this have no business in government. They don't care about the little people. They just want to see themselves making headlines. Good for Mitch for taking a stand...

I’ve decided to stop engaging with these people anymore. They are obsessed with hating anything and everything trump or republican. The second someone from Biden’s side does something that makes them giddy they run here and post about it and they all praise them. It’s mind boggling. It’s actually concerning at this point and I feel bad for anyone who listens/follows their “opinion”

There is a HUGE difference between one single member of Congress making an inappropriate remark and apologizing, than another Congressperson spouting conspiracy theories (Jewish laser starting CA fires), stating at a rally that she is coming for that b*tch - referring to Nancy Pelosi, chasing David Hogg down the street in DC spouting that he was making it all up and screaming about her right to carry a firearm, pushing past security to avoid a metal detector etc etc.

Now there are reports that she was given a standing ovation yesterday. That is repugnant.

The only thing that is concerning is that there are STILL people like you who refuse to acknowledge just how destructive, abhorrent and criminal Trump and his administration were. As for the Republican party, they are a sad and pathetic bunch who stand for NOTHING.

It is truly "mind boggling" that people are still drinking the Kool-Aid. How embarrassing.

So "hating everything trump" is pointing out the Federal laws he breaks on a regular basis, inciting a riot to overthrow the government, saying he "loves" the rioters who almost killed his VP and other members of Congress, 30,000+ lies in 4 years, ignoring a global pandemic leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths, allowing the pandemic to destroy the economy, losing jobs in many sectors, firing staff at an unbelievable rate, having "interim" staff to avoid Senate approvals, hiring Cabinet members with no experience but a history of trying to take down the Department they were put in charge of, or having a direct conflict of interest in, etc, etc.
And the Republican response is always "Stop picking on him"

So, OK, he's not POTUS, so we won't talk about him anymore. There's minimal posts about him directly since Jan 20. Most of the posts are "Hey, Biden had bipartisan support of a Secretary of a Department, that's great" "Look, the POTUS is doing what a normal President does. Good job." "I'm not a huge fan of his, but he hasn't done anything terrible yet, so it's a nice change of pace. When he does something bad, I'll call him out on it."

And saying "The POTUS is doing his job." is getting giddy and praising him? I don't see any praise yet, just happiness that the POTUS is actually doing the job of the POTUS and not trying to destroy our Democracy.

I kind of understand this point. There are people on both sides like this. I got off the phone with my mother and she was like Trump is running everything from Mar A Lago with Alanon... Yes, Alanon...

She’s old, though, and I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

It still doesn’t excuse Greene’s behavior.

ETA: I didn’t fully read this thread and just wanted to throw in my anecdote.
