Media Bias: Where do you get your news from?
I see this everywhere, on here, on social media and specifically on Facebook... people claiming they don't read or watch a particular site because it leans to the left, or another because it leans to the right. I find that infuriating because I'm of the firm belief that you don't know that your positions are 'right' (for you) until you know what the other side has to say, and if you shut yourself off to that side then you can't possibly be making an informed decision.
This year I find that every time I read anything, I spend a good 20 minutes double checking every point in the article, and then researching that site or publication to discern where their bias is, and then another go round through Factcheck for accuracy. I'm exhausted, but I want to be informed.
Just for background, I come from a family that is very politically divided.. both extremely conservative and to the left of Ghandi liberal, so I've always been exposed to the extremes of both. I have one uncle who impressed me many years ago when I asked him how he identifies politically and he said "Liberal. Other people add the 'flaming'." And when I asked where he get his news from, he told me Fox News.
His brother watches the same but for the opposite reason. Naturally, they don't along, not even as children.
So I ask you, where do you get your news from and if you'd indulge me, why is that your choice?

Same here. I understand outlets lean one way or another, but Fox has been proven to just make up a lot of stuff (stats from last year have them making up about 60% of what they say). NBC isn't much better (44% False), so it's not only the right-wing media that makes stuff up.

That's where I get most of it. And then I start my research. But I'm friends with very informed people so it helps raise the bar a little.

I look at the heading on FB, then ask DH for the details.
He spends all day online looking at the media anyway, so can usually tel me what is going on without me having to read/listen.

Re: Media Bias: Where do you get your news from?
I generally read a lot on CNN. I'll read other news outlets as well but my "go to" is CNN. I am very leery of the things I see on posted FB, some people are just posting complete nonsense "news articles" from sources that are completely not reputable.

Pretty much all MSNBC. But I recognize that it's biased. I also look at FactCheck and Poiltifact often. And during elections I look at 538 a few times a day but that's not really news.
I like BBC News too.

I switch between CNN and Fox News. TBH I find that both of them are biased. Fox is more biased to the right and CNN is more biased to left. Unfortunately, I dont believe there is a truly unbiased network out there.

I totally agree that there are biases. Hell, if newspapers come out and endorse candidates - then yes, bias is rampant.
I read everything. All sides. It's annoying and time consuming.

Ughh this is my biggest gripe always has been but I guess especially so in this election year. There's no such thing as "news." All the mainstream networks are owned by billionaries and corporations who push their own agenda and self interest. CNN, CNBC, Fox none are better than the other it just comes down to whose agenda you prefer to hear. It's sad in a way, the public really deserves better than the garbage they feed us.
I honestly find the best "news" on Al Jazeera or BBC. But it's not perfect either.

IMO, that's really the best anyone can do. Watch both sides, decide for yourself.
And frankly, since I decided this morning I would read up on media bias, I've come to the conclusion (aka I read it somewhere today and agree) it's asking quite a lot of human beings to not have a bias one way or the other because we're formed by our experiences and they will push us in one direction or the other. That doesn't mean the 'other side' should be dismissed outright, and it doesn't mean that what is being reported is completely innaccurate or untrue.

What news? There is no news anymore. News is new material. Telling me Trump is a pig and Hillary is a liar isn't new material. No one is discussing anything else.

I google everything. I look at everything. If there's a quote, I look it up to see the context. I try not to fall for clickbait headlines. I look at primary sources if possible- transcripts, court documents, government documents, etc. If I see something on CNN for example, I look to see how other outlets, including Fox News or extreme sites such as Breitbart interpret the same story. If a site has ads on it for the 9 foods that can help you sleep better, I will read it but take what's written with a large grain of salt. I look at PolitiFact and factcheck but also look at the sources they used and read those as well.
For example, I know whoever says that HRC helped get a child rapist get off and laughed about it, didn't do their due diligence.

I think it was the meme about that case that got me started on this research-everything-to-the-death journey that I'm on.

I think someone said this already but the BBC is great for American news.
When I was creating an assignment for my students about the election (I'm a SS teacher) I took a lot from their website about the candidate's positions because the wording was pretty neutral.
