medical benefits question (kinda HR related)

Hi

just wondering if anyone has any input regarding the following:

I have been with the same law office for over 10 years. They provide medical benefits just for me (i pay a weekly co-insurance). My husband now has medical benefits for the whole family & I am considering changing to his plan. My question is do you think it is reasonable to ask my firm to pay me the money that they have been paying toward my insurance instead? My reasoning is that I was hired with these benefits as part of my salary and condition of employment, so, if they no longer pay for them, they are in a sense reducing my salary. I want to request this in writing to the managing partner, but wanted some feedback first. Thanks.

When I accepted my job I turned down benefits because they are fully paid for at DH's job. I got a waiver of $2500 more per year. It doesn't hurt to ask, and I don't see why they wouldnt.

Our company does that. Sometimes they will negotiate a higher salary for an employee if they decline our benefits.
So it's not unreasonable for you to ask them.

I agree it's not unreasonable to ask. Dh's company does this. He's under my health insurance and his company pays him additional money each paycheck.

My company does not do this. I work for a small company, less than 10 and they said no.

Absolutely!!!!!!!!! Have you read the companies policy........I know a few companies that offer benefits OR compensation if you choose not to accept them......I think it's a fairly frequent request....GL

Thanks for all the responses! I checked our policy manual & it doesn't have anything about this, but then again, there are policies in there that they don't adhere to anyway, so neither they nor I could use that to back us up! I am going to leave a memo on my boss' desk today & see what happens - I'll let you all know whenever I get a response! Chat Icon

I work for a law office and our insurance is covered too. In the past they have given a ::raise:: when someone went off the plan but as an FYI it was NOT the full amount they were paying for benefits. However there shouldnt be anything tabboo about asking! And while you may not get it all back as a raise they do take it into consideration come bonus time. Good Luck and get those extra bucks!!!Chat Icon

It can't hurt to ask, if you have that kind of relationship with your boss.

Most of the companies that offer some sort of payout for having other medical coverage don't pay the employee as much as they were paying for insurance. Rather, it's a portion of the premium cost as a way of saying "thanks for saving us some money".

If your company doesn't have a general practice of this, you may get nothing. But it can't hurt to ask.

If they have other people who are not on their medical plan, be prepared for them to say no, since paying you would mean they would have to pay everyone who isn't on their insurance.

we used benefits as a bargaining chip for DH recently since he's covered under me. He got an 8K raise out of it.

I say go for it!

Your company might give you some money because you do not take their benefits - and they probably have something in place. At my company we pay emplaoyees $500 when they waive benefits but we would never give them the $$$ that we really pay to subsidize their benefits.

I would aks your HR Generalist of Benefits Rep. This is very specific to the company that you work for.
