Men, Antidepressants & TTC
So DH might go on an antidepressant. he has dealt with the death of his Mom, Grandpa and a slew of other issues in the past year and is really suffering. I am currently on Lexapro short term. I know that I should be off the antidepressant while TTC, but does it have an effect on the man? Would his sperm be "tainted?" We are going to talk to a Dr., but I jut wanted to get some info. from anyone who experienced anything similar here.
TIA.

Re: Men, Antidepressants & TTC
I was also on Lexapro before TTC and when I told my Dr. i was TTC he switched me to Prozac--it's suppossed to be the safest during pregnancy. When i found out I was pregnant, my OBGYN encouraged me to stop the prozac and I did. You really need to evaluate how you will be able to cope without an anitdepressant. I did relatively well but I know other women who suffered without the meds throughout the pregnancy. I think for most people the benefits of the antidepressants outweigh the risks. Talk to your Dr about all options they say that taking nothing is best during pregnancy but that's not always possible for everyone. As far as your husband goes, I've never heard that antidepressants effect sperm count or motility. My husband was on Zoloft during our 2 years of TTC and not one of the Dr's or specialists we saw said that there was anything wrong with him taking it. In my opinion both partners should try to be in the best physical and mental health while TTC that way you'll be better equiped to handle the pregnancy. So, if your husband is struggling right now then he should really sit down with a psychiatrist...some meds and a little talk therapy could really help him. Good Luck!
