Re: Merrick teacher lost job due to Princesses show
I saw the video and I was literally like, THAT? That was IT?
C'mon, really?
He honest to God, walked over to the pool and took his shirt off like he was going to jump in - like I do 15,000 times a summer. He wasn't doing ANYTHING anywhere near inappropriate.
I am the first to say that teachers need to be held accountable for INAPPROPRIATE things posted on FB, drug use, illegal activity, sexual instances with students or people underage, etc. etc. but this just seems really over the top.
He has a very strong case for winning a lawsuit, very strong.
It's a shame because they showed all of his "ratings" and he received highly effective in like every single area.

Re: Merrick teacher lost job due to Princesses show
I don't think he did anything wrong. I think its ridiculous that the board took away his tenure and forced him to resign. He showed a little skin..Not a bad looking guy might I add But what if he was at Splish Splash and his students saw him there or a public beach or pool??

Re: Merrick teacher lost job due to Princesses show
If you choose to resign instead if being terminated, you can take a tenured position again. You can't if you're terminated. Most teachers are asked to resign and do it for that reason! It's not shady.

Is that speculation? Or you know details?

There has to be. The school district isn't going to open itself up for lawsuits without more.

Merrick teacher lost job due to Princesses show
I agree...there has GOT to be another reason than just being shirtless in the background of a TV show.

Re: Merrick teacher lost job due to Princesses show
This is insane and doesn't seem like there is anything more to the story. He did nothing wrong other than be at a party with a bunch of idiots. He was granted tenure and rated highly effective on his new teacher evaluation system. That says a lot about the kind of teacher he is. This is completely ridiculous.

Re: Merrick teacher lost job due to Princesses show
I realized I didn't post my thoughts about it LOL.
I kind of feel like he was made an example of by his school district.....not that he did anything wrong per se but maybe they want to use this as a threat for no one else to go on a reality show.
I saw a clip on one of the tv news stations this morning where he commented a good friend had invited him to tag along to this party----he didn't sound like he knew what it was for or what it would turn into a year later when the show aired.
I'm not a teacher and I don't know if there's more to it, or the politics involved in his district, but JMO of what I think could be going on.
I also think the show is tame by comparison to the other reality shows out there on TV right now.
These women don't paint themselves in the best light, but I think it would be different if one of them were a teacher and then went on the show.

I think so to. This is a teacher with a union behind him and presumably he spoke with an attorney or two before making any decisions.

I don't believe his tenure went into effect yet...so there's little the union can do to help him without tenure. That's why tenure is so powerful, without it, schools can let teachers go for any reason they see fit.
Sadly, schools do make bad decisions sometimes, and it seems like that's what happened here. I think they jumped the gun, found out he was on that reality show, and decided to let him go before really looking into it. A teacher who has a "highly effective" rating is not someone the district is looking to get rid of! That's a tough rating to get!!
Hopefully, the school realizes their mistake and takes him back. He seems like a great teacher...and we all know we need great teachers!

Re: Merrick teacher lost job due to Princesses show
For him to have "highly effective" in most areas as an untenured teacher says a lot. I have to say, I'm really surprised that this is happening based on this one incident.
If he was granted tenure in May, it wouldn't go into effect until the first day of the school year for him in September.
Tenure or not, the school could have started an investigation against him. Tenure would have just prolonged it because he would have been entitled to due process.
ETA: I just watched the video. I have to say, I applaud the parents for making a stand like that. It makes me really happy as a teacher.
