Met with my doctor last night and some interesting info came out of the appointment...
We discussed TTC and said that we would be officially trying in the next few months and I asked her what to do to be as healthy as possible for TTC. I told her i was taking a prenatal vit for 9 months now in preparation. She told me to stop taking it because you only need to take the vitamins your body can use. She said that prenatals are not meant for non-pregnant or non-lactating woman. She says that you should never take more vitamins than you need as this could be harmful. She said Centrum is a good vitamin with a supplement of 400 mcg of Folic acid. She also said the first and last 10 days of your cylcle bd everyday if you want but that you should only bd every other day during your middle 8 or 9 days. wasn't expecting to hear about the prenatal thing.

My dr. told me the same thing about the prenatals. I take a centrum chewable, and she said once I get a +pg test, to call and she will give me a prenatal prescription.

Wow!
My doctor wanted me on it before I got preggo and said it was fine for me to take them after I had my DD.
9 Months later and I am still taking them.
I guess every doctor thinks differently.

I agree that every patient AND every doctor is different. If they run comprehensive bloodwork and find that you have nutritional deficiencies BEFORE you are pregnant (which I have) they may suggest that yes, in fact you SHOULD be on a prenatal. For someone like me, who has had weight loss surgery, I have to take vitamin supplements for the rest of my life. I was taking A, B12, D, E and K with NO folic acid before TTC. I am also deficient in iron. I have bloodwork done by my surgeon every 6 months to make sure my blood levels are normal. Since TTC, both my surgeon and my OB/GYN agree that I should be taking a specific prenatal that will cover my dietary and TTC needs.
There are plenty of other people in the world who are not like me, who need supplements for whatever the reason.
IMO, there is no universal rule. Each patient is different.

Very interesting. My MD told me to take folic acid starting 4 months before TTC - which I did. I also decided to take a multi-vitamin b/c my eating habits are awful. When I saw him earlier this week (because we have been unable to conceive), he gave me prenatals to take instead of the multi-vitamin. The contents of the two vitamins are sooooooo different it's astounding.

Like everyone has said every doctor is different. My doctor gave me a prescription for prenatals and told me to start taking them one month before TTC.

I think unless you're malnutritioned or have an underlying medical condition that calls for extra vitamins, it is not necessary to take them way in advance. Im almost 11 weeks and due to indigestion and constipation, my doctor advised me to take them every other or every 2 days. He said you really don't need them until the second trimester when the baby starts to grow siginificantly, and at the beginning we have enough extra vitamins to give it to the baby. I think a regular miltivitamin would do the trick.

Everybody has different needs, but my doctor told me only to take folic acid for TTC. I do take a regular multivitamin too.

Every doc is different. I am pregnant now and I cant take my prenatals. Odds are I will still have a healthy baby. Listen to your doc based upon "YOUR" needs.

I was told the same thing, by my doctor and my DH (he is a dr. too). My dr. also said to take centrum, but mine Cent. only had 200 mg.. when we need 400 of folic acid. So, I take Folic Acid 400 and Centrum daily.
Good luck!

I think every doctor is different. I started on prenatals 3 mos before TTC. Ultimately, you have to do whatever you feel is most comfortable for you and your DH. Good luck!!!

Just to add, it's funny that a dr. would say prenatals aren't good for you, they are really just a multi-vitamin with extra folic acid. If you check out a multi-vitamin, they are rather similar really. actually, prenatals tend to have less calcium than multi-vitamins. I always find that odd.
