Mezuzah painted over by management!

I got home to my apartment this morning (I was away for the weekend) to find that my door was repainted by management and they PAINTED OVER THE MEZUZAH on my doorpost! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The painter made sure to paint very nicely around the lock on my door though. Chat Icon

I was crying and wrote the management company to tell them that not only was I extremely upset about the action of painting over it, but was also upset at the monetary cost since I bought this mezuzah and the scrolls in Israel and they were not cheap.

Thank goodness management wrote me back apologizing and saying they would make sure it didn't happen again. They also said that I should provide them with the cost of fixing it (not probable) or the replacement cost so they could consider reimbursement.

What KILLS me is that I actually walked around my apartment building and I saw another mezzuzah painted over, I have no idea if the tenant realized yet or not.

Just wanted to vent, it was a gorgeous gold mezuzah and blue stones!

I am not familiar with mezuzahs but in looking at pictures on Google there's no way it was accidental that the painter didn't see it. It was probably someone who just didn't care to do the right thing and ask before painting.

Thanks everyone.

My thought exactly! Even if the painter wasn't familiar with Jewish customs (though I would assume a painter in NYC has seen more than one mezuzah in their career) you'd think they err on the side of caution when they say a gold art-looking item on the door! It baffles me.

Re: Mezuzah painted over by management!

I am so sorry and would be devastated. We have one with the broken glass from our wedding in it. That one is outside our bedroom door though. I can imagine how you feel. I hope you get the money back even though it really would never replace yours. Have you googled anything about safely removing paint?

Mezuzah painted over by management!

Forgive me if this sounds ignorant or stupid, but, can you soak it in paint thinner? Not sure if that would ruin the sacredness of it.
Sorry that that happened. I hope they do the right thing.

Mezuzah painted over by management!

i'm so sorry the painter did that.

even if he isn't familiar with the Jewish faith, living in NY, these are things you learn to respect.

i hope the management company fixes the problem.

now, the crafter in me wonders if the paint can be removed.

Wow that's crazy. I would think a painter in NYC has seen a mezuzah or 2 during his career. I hope you can get the paint off!

This was my thought too. Is there a way to remove it and use a paint thinner and see if it is salvageable? I am sort that happened!

Maybe remove it and bring it to a jeweler to be cleaned? Sorry that happened to you.

Not a stupid question! I'm thinking about doing that. Not worrying about sacredness, I think if anything, the paint ruined the sacredness so the paint thinner can only help the situation!

Wow I'm disgusted, even if they don't know the value of a mezuzah it's clearly personal property...

I am devastated for you. I would consult a rabbi to see how to make it kosher again. I hope that you can fix it and/or they reimburse you for a new one and a new kosher scroll.

Mezuzah painted over by management!

That is horrible!!! I feel so bad for you! Regardless if the painter did not know what it was, why on earth would you paint over something that clearly was not an actual part of the door... Unless it was done maliciously... That's really sad

What a moron to do that, seriously. You don't have to know what it is to SEE IT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU JUST PAINT OVER.

Good lord these are sentimental too!! Can be wedding gifts etc...

Sorry!!Chat Icon

Mezuzah painted over by management!

That is terrible! Why the heck would you paint over something that looks like jewelry!!

We had a mezuzah outside our coop and I told my painter not to paint it or remove it, I am Catholic but I felt like it was bad luck to remove it and I would never paint over it!

i would look into having the paint removed. im sure there is SOMEONE who specializes in this, and who cares about cost, have the building pay.

I would be so upset! I'm so sorry love.

I'm sure you know this but if you DO soak it in paint thinner or treat it at all make sure to remove the scroll first. Hopefully management pays for it, as they should.

Mezuzah painted over by management!

If it is latex paint, you may be able to peel it off after using a hair dryer on it.

That's pretty crappy of the painter, sorry :(

I agree.

There is no way that can really be reimbursed IMO. Would they have done that with a crucifix? I would make sure to contact to company they used to paint your apartment. This is unforgivable.

Eta: I grew up in NYC, and this isn't the first time I have seen and heard about mezuzahs being painted over. I think it's true ignorance. Paint companies should be taught how to recognize religious items in homes.
