Milk Protien Allergy Moms Starting Solids (esp if your baby is on an amino acid formula)

So dd is nearing 4 months old and at our practice they start them on rice cereal at 4 months. She has been diagnosed with a milk protien allergy and is on Neocate. I was wondering what others experiences were with starting solids with the allergy. Did they delay you? Also the Neocate that my dd is on constipates her terribly, she takes 1/2 an ounce of water in 4 bottles daily and it helps a little but not always. Don't these cereals constipate you even further? I'm worried about her going on them when we are just managing the constipation ok as is... Any experience would be much appreciated thanks!!

My DD was on Neocate, as well, and they actually started her on oatmeal because the rice was so constipating and they were concerned about that in addition to the Neocate. I found that once she started veggies at 4 months, she was much less constipated because of the fiber. I'd try giving a little more water. The more water my DD had, the better.
So we skipped rice altogether and only did oatmeal, not barley either, and we started that at 3 months. By 4 months she was on veggies, 5 on fruits, 6 on turkey and chicken and by 8 months, she was completely off purees and eating table food. But she was a great eater, so we went with it.
HTH!

Hi,

My daughter is on Elecare and has a very sensitive stomach. When we started rice cereal it constipated her so I tried oatmeal which my ped guaranteed me would be great. It was NOT great for her. She had terrible gas and was up all through the night crying in pain. I was about to give up on solids when I tried barley. It was a godsend!! It totally agreed with her and also helped the constipation. As soon as we started veggies and fruit I had no problem giving her the rice again. She still cannot tolerate the oatmeal.

**Make sure you do not use Gerber cereals--they sometimes contain soy.
Beechnut and Earth's best work for my daughter!

Good luck!

When it comes to babyfood--look out there are some baby food companies that make it with milk.

My son is on Nutramigen AA and never haad too many issues with constipation. Of course a few times but not daily. I started giving him prunes in his cereal around 5 months and that really helped regulate both of them. I would probably go right to oatmeal as rice is more constipating.

As far as baby food. Stay away from Beech Nut as lots of their food has dairy in it. I had teh best luck with Earth's best

I skipped rice and oatmeal (my kids had a reaction to oatmeal and rice constipated them) so I gave them Barely. DD has the allergy so I stuck to Earth's Best because some of the other brands had milk in it. When you get to jarred foods that are mixed you will need to read labels because a lot of them have dairy in it.
