Miller Place people...?
I see a cute house that is right next to some type of farm. If you go to google maps (satellite view) and put in:
265 oakland avenue, miller place, ny
To the left of it is a huge farm. It would be nice to have a big area of undeveloped land so close but what about things like the smell of fertilizer, and the sound of farm equipment and sprinklers?
Anybody know what type of farm this is, or what the cons of living next to one are?

I am not sure where that is but the only farms I know of are sod farms in MP.

My best friend growing up lived at 294 Oakland Avenue. That is a sod farm and it never bothered them once. A lot of it has already been sold to developers tho, so house MAY be going up there in the near future.
We loved that sod farm, we'd ice skate in the winter and hang out on it in the summer.

I agree about the farms.
DH grew up in Miller Place and we have friends that live there.
It is south of 25A. That is a nice area and close to everything. However, many of those farms have been bought by developers recently so there may be building in the future.
We have good friends that used to live on Parkside and that is a nice area (one street over).

This is what my concern would be. Since I've moved to the town I live in now, two farms have been sold to developers with houses starting at 1 million.
A similar thing happened to my aunt and uncle about 10 years ago. There was an empty lot next to their house for over 30 years. They knew someone owned it but my cousins and I played on it all of the time, then hung out in our teen years... and sleded down the hill into the main road One summer, they went to Ireland for three weeks and when they came home, there was a house next door... complete foundation and framed out. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

You're absolutely right, it is the sod farm. I would expect less smelliness considering they probably wouldn't fertilize as much as say a corn farm or something.
I'll see if I can do some more investigation on the developers who bought the sites.
Thanks!!

I don't remember it smelling at all and I spent a good amount of time on that sod farm.
There used to be a peach farm right on the border of Miller Place and Mt. Sinai and when the houses went up there, it was SO fast, so maybe the land has not been sold.

Re: Miller Place people...?
After reading a little more, it appears that not all the land will go to development. A good portion (120 acres) is proposed to go for "community" land. Then some houses, and some senior developments.
This has been going on since 2003. Who knows when it will end?
