ive been thinking about thart as well
but i admit i have my heart set on a mini.
who knows, i was just wondering what they were like from ppl who own them.
seems like the one person who has one loves it, so that makes me happy.

I have a VW Golf - since 2001 - and LOVE it. It is perfect for the city, very reliable, and holds a ton of stuff!

I have a Ford Focus hatch back- and while I completely the MINI coopers I would never, ever, ever get one and street park it- way too much money for that- however- if you are going to get a spot- it will be a GREAT city car.
My ford focus with the hatch back was my city car- and I really didn't mind it getting dings, dents and scratches from street parking b/c it was only like 16k..
Good luck w/ whatever you choose.. the HOnda Fit might also be a good option, or the Nissan Versa- they both got good ratings for subcompact cars from consumer reports and I know the Nissan Versa's marketing campaign is based upon it having lots of interior room.

Re: Mini Cooper...... who has one?
I don't have one...but when it comes to small cars I LOVE the Nissan Versa. My coworker has one and I just love it. If I was in the market for a small car I would get that one.

if you are going to park on the street- maybe get a used one? so you don't constantly get upset when it gets bumped by other cars?

Re: Mini Cooper...... who has one?
We live in the city and DH parks his car on the street evey night. DH drives a Nissan Maxima. Not a small car, but it still works in the city. When we moved here, DH drove a Mazda MX6 (Sports carish). Granted we picked our neighborhood based on street parking- but it still works.
We really don't see too many Minis on the road here either. You can get another small car like a Bug or some other car.

Re: Mini Cooper...... who has one?
My aunt and uncle have one, they've had it for about three years now and they love it!! They take it all over the place, including down to Virginia and Florida all the time. Also, the couple across the street from me have one and she loves it too.
As far as driving a small car vs. an SUV...it's all about the driver. I drove a Celica for years and loved it...never in an accident. Small cars are faster and more manueverable so it's easy to avoid a problem. SUV's are bigger and people feel safer...The only reason I have one is cuz I drive it on the beach all the time and I bought the most economical one on the market at the time. I still miss my Celica sometimes.
I say, take it for a test drive and check out the feedback on Consumer Reports, then decide if you really want it.

Re: Mini Cooper...... who has one?
My friend had one, and he had nothing but problems with it. He actually got rid of it after about 2 years.
Oh, and it is very small inside, I have drove in his a few times. Smaller then my old Hyundai Elantra. I found it pretty uncomfortable. I don't know how anyone could take this car on a road trip. It is a cute car and very fast, but I would never get one. Maybe if I didn't drive that much.

ETA: I think it's silly to think a car is too small to drive because there are too many big trucks around - Long Island needs to stop the obsession with the SUVs and drive smaller cars. Save money on gas! Save the planet!!!
what about the mack trucks then? until those are gone- you wont get me out of my SUV- I drive on I-95 everyday and I would not feel safe in something smaller
and it's not just LI- America
You're right, it's not just LI. But as for driving on I95 with mack trucks, if one of those plows into you, an SUV is not going to save you.

ITA- plus a lot of SUV drivers have this false sense of security. Guess what? Your bumper is most likely LESS effective in protecting you than the bumper on a mid-sized sedan.
Good driving skills and good tires make for a safe ride, not a gas-guzzling, intimidating vehicle.

Re: Mini Cooper...... who has one?
Jess - it's terrible on the roads in our area...you will seriously hit every single pothole and feel it. I drove one for three weeks when my friend was out of town and it was the worst experience of my life. I would not recm'd it living in the 5boros...on LI - yes...but especially not in the city.
It's a VERY safe car and is rated highly...but that's the least of your worries....you'll definitely get side swipped constantly.
Furthermore...best friend has a Mazda Miata...and lives in DUMBO....I cannot tell you how many times she's come out and her car was dented b/c of other cars. She's also been backed up on three times in the last six months b/c drivers cannot see her.

Yeah, people definitely need to get into smaller cars.
I don't understand the need for gignatic gas guzzler eyesores Not all trucks are gas-guzzling eyesores. Actually there are a ton of American-made trucks that are getting 30 mpg. This is not even including the hybrids.

That is not entirely true. There are plenty of trucks that will not, but there are some "real trucks" still that are built like trucks & will save you. I will be the first to say that I hate most SUVs. I think they are as someone coined "lifestyle cars" and most people who drive them are inexperienced in driving a truck & do not really know what to look for in a truck (before I get flamed by SUV drivers this is fact and the highway safely council is actually looking to have a special SUV safety defensive driving course for SUV drivers).
For those of us who always drove trucks before it was fashionable, or the replacement of station wagons or family vans, we remember when trucks were boxy, ugly & made of steel, when they had 40lb clutches & when you got popeye arms from steering them. Yeah they were rough, but I tell you when DH was hit by a cement truck on the LIE at 70 MPH he did not get a scratch on him. The Cement truck actually had more damage. DH had to drive on the LIE b/c he has commercial plates....most SUV drivers could take an alternate route if they so desired & would NOT need to be on the same roadways as the larger commercial trucks.
Having said that, once you drive a truck & have the visibility & the 4WD it is hard to go back into a car. I tried with my Scion XB & hated it. I am back in a truck. Now we have options of better gas milage & such, so why not?
Jes to answer your question I'd go to a dealership & check one out that came off lease recently. If it looks banged up from potholes, etc, then I would not get it. JMO

ITA- my first SUV was the orginal 4 Runner- no power steering, no rugs- nothing lux about it- it was a pick up with a cap and back seat- I loved that car- it was a box on wheels
I have a much nicer SUV now- it doesn't drive like a truck- but it's built like a tank-
I'm so little- that I really can't see as well being in a car so low to the ground-I tried it- I hated it and I got a SUV
I get decent gas mileage - and I will most likely get the new diesel or a hybrid
