MMR Shots and 6w preggo
hey ladies,
I have to get updated MMR shots and I was wondering if it's okay. I'm 6w pregnant, and I need them in the next week or so.
Any drawbacks to having MMR shots in week 6? Is this a total "no no"?
Thanks!

Re: MMR Shots and 6w preggo
honestly i wouldn't ask that here as none of us are doctors (that i know of)--just pregnant women! we may have our opinions, but the only opinions that matter are those of your doctors. some of us are more conservative or open minded than others and those are the opinions you'd hear from the ladies on the board.
you really should ask the doctors. they won't give it to you if there's a chance of anything negative happening.
good luck!

Re: MMR Shots and 6w preggo
Although i'm not a DR, I did work for a Family Practice for a long time and it was a big NO-NO to give MMR's to preggos. Reason being that it contains the live virus strains of all 3. Check with your own OB, but its pretty well documented that its not recommended. Actually, they even say that you're supposed to wait 3-6 months after getting an MMR to conceive because of the effects if could have on an unborn baby. Again, i'm not a DR, but would stronglt suggest you really look into it before doing it.....

I realize that LIFers aren't doctors. Just figured I'd put it out there since I can't call my doc until tomorrow anyway.
Thanks for your input.

Re: MMR Shots and 6w preggo
I would def ask and check with your OB and see what he/she says. It could be harmful to get while pg or harmful in your first trimester.

Re: MMR Shots and 6w preggo
Thanks... I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to enroll into post-grad school for the fall without my MMR shots... They are pretty strict about this.

Re: MMR Shots and 6w preggo
You cannot get this shot while pregnant. I am not a Dr but this is pretty easy info to get as I was told by my IVF Dr and it is in a few of my pregnancy books. I am not immune to measles I found out when I did my pre IVF testing. My Dr wants me to get it after I give birth. I did have this as a child but apparently outgrew it. I would talk to the school and maybe get a note from your Dr. You may even be able to use your old vaccination record. Thats what I did for college which was many yrs ago but they never asked me to be retested

Re: MMR Shots and 6w preggo
Acccording to the CDC, you should NOT have the MMR while pregnant. You're getting a live virus after all, regardless of how weak it is. Here's the info straight from the CDC.
MMR for pregnant women
------------------------------------------------ Q. Does exposure to the MMR vaccine cause birth defects? Other vaccines?
The MMR is a vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella. If a woman gets one of these viruses while pregnant, it may cause her to have a miscarriage or to have a baby with birth defects. The MMR, like some other vaccines, is made with viruses that are alive but very weak. Because these viruses are alive, there is a very slight chance that they may cause harm to the baby. For this reason, a woman who may be pregnant should not get an MMR or other vaccine unless she is at high risk of getting a serious illness without it. She should talk about the risks and benefits of getting the vaccine with her doctor. A woman who has just gotten the vaccine and then learns she is pregnant should also talk with her doctor. Vaccines such as those for tetanus and hepatitis are made from dead viruses or parts of dead viruses and do not cause infection in the mother and should not harm the fetus.
Edited to say: You can probably get a medical waiver or show them record of your past MMR shot to avoid having to do this now. Good luck!

Re: MMR Shots and 6w preggo
I found out while Preggo that I did not have an immunity to Rubella (the R in MMR ). I was told I would get the shot AFTER I delivered, and I did just that.
