moderately priced formal dining room sets--where should i look? UPDATED with a new question in 1st post
i figure it will be around 4-5K.
i want a formal dining room table and buffet/china cabinet.
i've already checked raymour and flanigan, thomasville , and ashley furniture. i found one in ashley that i liked but didn't love.
where else has moderately priced sets preferably in nassau or western suffolk?
thanks!!!
ETA: can you recomend a store to DEFINITELY visit on route 110? i can't possibly hit them all and it's a far drive for me!

My friend got a beautiful set from JC Penny. What about finding the design & manufacturer you like & ordering from NC? That's what I did with my Broyhill bedroom set. Also check out Craigs List.

Basset has some sets in that range. Thomasville is ridiculous IMO.

Ashley Furniture. We bought most of our furniture from there and saw some nice dining room sets.

Re: moderately priced formal dining room sets--where should i look?
Believe it or not my friend just got a one year old MINT condition Thomasville set on craigslist, the glass shelves were still wrapped in paper and had never been put in the china cabinet. The people selling it were relocating and couldn't take it with them. The entire set is over $8,000 new, my friend bought all of the pieces & custom table pads for $2,500 She paid a mover $250 to bring it to her house out east. And she ordered more chairs from thomasville.
We bought our 120" table and 8 chairs on craigslist last year for less than $1000

Check out the furniture stores all along route 110 - many of them have dining sets in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.
We've seen our set in a few dinette stores as well, so check them out as well. They can also custom make a set for you at these places based on what wood you want, chair style and table.

Re: moderately priced formal dining room sets--where should i look?
thanks everyone for the suggestions. i've already checked out some of those that were mentioned, but i will look at a few more over the next week!
i'm looking for something fairly specific--has to open to at least 110", rectangular, matching large china/buffet and not country or contemporary. surprisingly, it leaves few options but i'm determined to find the perfect set!

I came THIS close *pinching fingers together* to buying a set at Macy's. They have beautiful stuff, and reasonably priced, when they have sales going on. GL

Tiffany Furniture. It's not the fanciest place inside but I got both my dining and bedroom sets there and I LOVE THEM! Let me know if you want to see pics. I saved THOUSANDS (enough that what I was going to buy at R&F - I was able to get both rooms for the same price).

I also bought our DR & BR set from Tiffany Furniture. You can even try to haggle with them a little. Our DR set is from Canadel. They make larger tables in a lot of different styles. You can pick the style of table with whatever style chairs with your style of legs on the table to the type of material on the chairs. Check out Canadel here. link
I'm not sure of the manufacture of our BR set, but it is good quality wood with dove tail drawers.
Tiffany Furniture is right next to R&F.

Re: moderately priced formal dining room sets--where should i look? UPDATED with a new question in 1st post
I had my dining room set custom made and it was actually less money for a better quality set. You'd be able to get exactly the size and style you want, color, etc. You might want to check that out before you settle for something you don't love or pay more than you want to.

JC Penny has some really affordable furniture. I too am looking for a dining room and a china/hutch for something reasonable and also something that I really love. I haven't found anything yet though.
