How can one tell the difference?
Which one is more dangerous to have randomly growing within the confines of your home?
How might one get rid???

I THINK mildew is black spots and mold is furry!
ETA mixbleach and hot water in a spray bottle 2 parts bleach one part water and spray let sit and scrub off. Also I think Tilex sells this stuff, mildew root remover which works food

Sounds like mold-try the bleach if that doesn't work bu the tilex stuff it's in a blu bottle with orange writing I think make sure you wipe the bleach off if it doesn't work can;'t mix household chemicals because of toxic fumes
