Mom driving drunk, daughter calls cops from the car!
From Newsday
An Islip woman was arrested on charges of drunken driving after her daughter called 911 from the vehicle, State Police said.
The arrest, made on Interstate 84 on Sunday in Brewster, came almost a year to the day that a West Babylon mom was involved in a wrong-way accident on the Taconic Parkway that killed eight.
"The scary thing is that it happened on the eve of this tragedy out on the Taconic," said Capt. Robert Nuzzo of the State Police
"The similarities are eerie - a woman going back to Long Island with the kids in the car" while driving drunk, he said.
In the Sunday incident, State Police said they arrested Jamie S. Hicks, 49, of 184 Grant Ave. in Islip and charged her with felony DWI under Leandra's Law because she was driving with children. State Police said neither of Hicks' children, a boy, 10, and a girl, 13, were injured.
Police said the daughter had frantically called 911 from the 1995 Buick LeSabre to report that their mother was driving badly.
The daughter said that "something was wrong" with her mother: "She was speaking strangely. She was driving erratically."
"She implied that the driver was possibly intoxicated," Nuzzo said. A police report said the driver was swerving into other lanes.
After the girl hung up, the 911 operator called back the cell phone several times. The phone was answered once, and the operator heard arguing, Nuzzo said.
The operator was able to pinpoint the location of the vehicle based on the call. Police said that when troopers found the vehicle stopped on the shoulder, "the operator was not speaking correctly" and had been "swerving into other lanes of traffic." Two good Samaritans - a man, 39, and a woman, 43 - had also stopped their minivan on the side of the road because they saw something that seemed amiss.
Tests indicated Hicks had a blood-alcohol content of 0.18 percent at the time of her arrest, police said, more than twice the legal limit of .08.
"This was not a couple of drinks. This was up there," Nuzzo said, adding that Hicks acknowledged she had been drinking "earlier in the day."
Hicks was arraigned in the Town of Southeast Court and was released on $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond. She is due back in court on Aug. 17 at 3 p.m., said Southeast Town court clerk Heather Fitzgerald.
Her children were released to the custody of their grandparents in Southbury, Conn., Nuzzo said. Hicks had just picked up the children from there earlier in the day, he said.

2K bond? Are they serious? That is an insult to her children and all the other innocent people on the road. Yes, Thank God, everyone is safe. I'm just so sad over hearing that.

That is so brave of the daughter. I can't imagine challenging the authority of a parent like that. She really knew what was right and wrong, and did the right thing to save herself and her family.
