Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
When people ask you what you're having and you say "It's a girl! " Do you feel that the "askers" are sometimes disappointed?
When I first found out I was having a girl, some people asked "How's your husband feeling about that?" which I thought was rude, sexist and odd.
When I tell people now at 8 months pregnant, I feel that a lot of the responses are "fake" happiness. Maybe b/c of the initial reactions I am overly-sensitive to this, but I have a friend who just gave birth to a . For 32 weeks, she thought it was a (they made a mistake at the level II and thought the finger was a penis--whoops...) anyway, I asked if she noticed a difference in the reaction to telling people girl vs. boy and she said there is a definite difference in favor of the boy.
Has anyone else gotten this feeling?

I don't know what I'm having yet - But I have found that it really depends on the person as far as the reaction to "Oh I HOPE you have a girl vs. boy" -

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I know some of my in laws are pulling for DH's first baby to be a boy. My family is almost all boys, so I think they kinda hope for a girl.
I think it depends on the person.
I just keep up my "I don't care, as long as it's healthy" speech and give the evil eye to anyone who tries to argue past that

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I'm having a but I get what you're saying because when I tell people it's a boy the first thing they say is, "oh, your DH must be soooo excited!". ummmm, yeah, but he would have been just as excited if it was a girl (and he would have been, neither of us truly had a preference at all....actually, I think he was secretly wanting a girl..). But I mean, this isn't acient rome where a husband is only happy with a male heir. It's really annoying that people even ask me that question about DH.

Yes! This is totally what I mean! I feel like if WE THE PARENTS do not have a preference, then why does this random "asker" really care about how my husband feels? It's also such an antiquated belief that men will only be satisfied with a son. Ugh.

Really? I actually feel people asking are thrilled when I tell them. Even some people I feel are envious of it. Funny, totally opposite feeling of what you feel.

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I haven't had that experience. A few people in my family thought I was having a boy at first, and I wondered if that meant they hoped I was having a boy, but nobody has acted at all disappointed. Well, that said, FH himself was. He wanted a boy, was convinced it was a boy, and was very disappointed when we found out it was a girl. It actually caused a huge fight between us. He has since said that it's not that he's upset he's having a girl, but definitely wants a boy at some point. I get that, but I still get mad thinking he was at all upset that we were having a girl, and quite honestly, it makes me a little more protective of her generally--like nobody better ever disrespect her or treat her any differently because she is a girl.

A VERY few people have been thrilled when I tell them. Mostly it's women...

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I'm having a
People have been THRILLED when I tell tham what I'm having. I never got the "oh, its a girl". They do ask what does your DH think and I just tell them "he's already picking out jewelry for the princess"!! and they all laugh!
Maybe its how you present it! I am OVERJOYED to be having a daughter and when I tell people they can tell that I am over the moon excited so maybe they pick up on that.....

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I always got the feeling that people were happy I was having a girl (with my first. We don't know what this baby is yet)- especially when women were the askers. I even had someone say to be that it's always better to have a girl first so that no matter what you get later on, you know you've had a daughter. I also had several people say "Oh I hope it's a girl! It's so much more fun to pick out girl clothes!"
Personally, I always fnd comments about the sex to be so offensive. I had when people pushed their "it's better to have a boy/girl" beliefs on me because like you said, it made me feel like I'd be disappointing someone if I had the opposite sex, which is just silly. This time I've been getting so much "Oh I'll pray for you that it's a boy so you can have one of each!" Can you just do me a favor & pray for a healthy baby?

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I'm actually surprised at that response to a girl. I always felt that people respond that way when they hear "boy". In fact, my friend was devastated by people's repsonses when she would tell them she was having a boy during her first pregnancy. This time around she decided not to find out for that exact reason.

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I feel the opposite. Everyone I know prefers girls and I have gotten quite a few comments indicating so (I hope it's a girl, I saw all of these cute girl clothes I want to buy, etc).
DH and I know it's a boy, but we are keeping it to ourselves.

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
See I feel I get some of that response when I say I'm having a boy. I really think it depends on who you are talking to and when someone shows a negative response we are more sensitive to it. Mostly, I wish people would shut it!

Exactly! I get comments like that or people will go, "...how do you feel about that?" ?!?! I'm excited, thank you very much! I think depending on who asks you they may have ideas either way (about or ) and then some of those people just have no social filter.

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
We don't know the sex yet but I hate when people insinuate that DH will not know what the hell to do with a girl. That offends him too. I think he'd be a great dad to a boy OR a girl. He actually sorta hopes it's a girl so he can prove everyone wrong! He obviously wants that daddy's little girl thing.
I can't stand rude people.

I haven't found that at all. And definitely not in my family--they were all rooting for a girl since my sister has 2 boys.

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I felt the opposite. I felt people (especially mommies of girls) were super excited about me having a girl and telling me how much fun I was going to have dressing her up and stuff. I was so happy to be having a girl and so was DH. He loves his little angel.

I can honestly say that everyone we told was completely excited for us. But as others have stated, people are dumb and say some real stupid stuff.

Re: Mommies of Girls: Strange Question
I can't believe that someone would have the nerve to A) show their disappointment of the sex of your baby and B) be disappointed in the first place!!!
Some people are ridiculous.

I didn't know what I was having until she was born so I didn't have any responses, other than "why aren't you finding out?" When we told everyone she was a girl, everyone seemed super excited.
