Moms in Merrick (or nearby)
My DD will be 2 1/2. She is speech delayed and I think it would help her if she was exposed to more kids. Doesn't have to be a place that is necessarily structured. I know many places like Gymboree have already started classes. But does anyone have any ideas of places where I can bring her just to get her exposed to other kids. My mom watches DD during the day. I know some places have Mommy and Me..or Grandma and me type things. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Does she get services through EI? There is a great place that I bring Jack in Merrick - Long Island Infant and Development. They have classes one day a week (set up like a nursery school) It's free through EI. We love it! I do believe that you can pay for it though, out of pocket

Re: Moms in Merrick (or nearby)
does she get EI services yet? if not, go there 1st, they can get you set up with mommy and me classes for speech delayed kids. we did one for my DS in hicksville through the agency that did his services.
if you're looking for a mommy and me type class.. there is the little gym in merrick, gymboree, thinkertots in wantagh just for starters. most of these places you can start whenever ,and just pay a prorated amount. if you miss the beginning its not a big deal.
if you're looking for a nursery type setting, there are the big ones like TLC, Merrick woods, south shore, maplewood in the area. the east meadow jewish center also does a preschool which starts at 2.
depends on what you're looking for really.

Can you give me more info. about this? I never heard of thsi through EI.
To the OP, I live in Merrick and brough DS to Moms and Tots off of Merrick Ave. The teacher is Miss. Judy and DS LOVED it!!!! He went from the time he turned 1 yr. to this past summer. I put him in st. John Lutheran (across from the middle school) 2 days a week starting in Sept.
I also did the Little Gym with DS but not sure it is the right fit for a speech delay...you probably want something more like Moms and Tots. I would definetely give them a call...although classes started they will still take children.

Re: Moms in Merrick (or nearby)
Crissy - this is the FM I just sent to OP:
You should talk to your EI coordinator - there are a ton of programs offered for kids who receive speech.
They add new kids all the time throughout the year. Right now it's only my son and two others - I believe they have up to ten in a class as the year goes on.
It's an hour class - starts out with free play - then the kids go into another room - here they do Circle Time, Storytime, Weatherbear (which is really cute) Sing songs, do a craft, have a snack, and then finish with bubbles and a sticker.
We go on Mondays at 9:15. It's a slow seperation class. Right now I am still in there with Jack - last class they had me leave right before bubbles. I'm guessing this week I'll leave a little bit earlier and do this every week. I just sit in the room outside and can look through two way mirrors.
I know that there are also programs through Hofstra and Adelphi. We did Hofstra over the summer and I like this one SOOOO much better.
They also have Gym type classes if you aren't looking for nursery school type programs. I want to say there is one called Cats gym. I can find that out for you.
It's right off of Sunrise on Hewlett Avenue!

and this is all offered through EI? I had no idea. I will call my coordinator tomorrow.
DS is in nursery school 2 x's a week and has therapy 5 x's a week but I am always open to looking into other acitvities he can do. He is a busy body and needs to be kept busy. With the baby I am looking for more of a seperation type setting.
ETA: If you can find out the name of the gym I would appreciate it so I can ask my coordinator about it. I think being DS already does nursery school and therapy he would benefit from a gym so he can let all his energy out.

the program in Merrick I did at Moms and Tots was Mommy and Me and I signed him up for the seperation program over the summer and he did great so I put him in the nursery school program. He LOVES it....he gets so excited when the teachers open the door he doesnt even say goodbye to me

This is the gym I believe - it's a sports based class - this is not a seperation class either though

Re: Moms in Merrick (or nearby)
DD does get EI at home. What program do you think would be better for a speech delayed child LI Infant and Development or Moms and Tots?

I think that a program based around speech is really helpful at this point - they make them work for it here.
I never did Moms and Tots but always did Gymboree and Music Together - I see this being more beneficial (at least for my son!)

If the LI Infant program is offered through EI for free I would definetely give it a shot since the Mommy and Me classes can be a little pricey. Plus it is more geared towards children with delays.
