Moms involved with Girl Scouts

I have a question about how your area handles events and parent attendance. A few years ago a mom fell in a school parking lot and sued the school and the Girl Scouts. Since then, no parents are allowed at most events. I'm a leader and when I go to the leader meetings, there's usually a fair amount of griping about unsupervised girls (usually the older girls- the Daisy/Brownie leaders seem the most diligent)

I'm just wondering if the no-parent rule is the norm anyway or just where I live. It annoys me because we're strongly encouraged to register parents (and get their money) but then they're not welcome at the events. The moms are mostly fine with drop off but I would like for attending to at least be an option.

The parents shouldn't be paying to register if they are not volunteering for something (nut, cookie sale, etc.). I only registered because I'm the cookie mom. Our meetings are drop off and the parents seem fine with that. Field trips (Panera, fire dept., etc.), our leaders ask for a couple of chaperones, but the rest of the parents leave. No one seems to have an issue with it

I was told when I inquired that parents are not encouraged to stay at meetings so the girls can learn respect for the leaders. I think it's the norm but not sure of course.

All events are drop-off unless otherwise specified.

For meetings - any adult is welcome to stay once, but once they stay again, they must register. Any parent handling money (i.e. cookie mom, nut mom, QSP mom) must register and have a background check completed.

Our first night time event many parents stayed, but we had one last Friday and not a single parent stayed.

Thanks for the feedback. Our meetings are drop off, which has always been ok. But we have a lot of events, 2-3 a month and usually on Fridays.

I think what's frustrated me is the mixed messages about whether or not parents can stay. We are doing day camping in June and I was initially told registered moms could come because of the age of our girls, then I was told they couldn't.

In our troop; we have a snack mom stay w/ us every meeting (we have 12 girls Daisies) & we need the extra set of hands for the endless bathroom trips, etc.

We only had our cookie mom register.

With that being said, every trip we went on that required travelling, just about every parent went/stayed. My co-leader & I do not feel comfortable being responsible driving girls in our private cars (just in case something were to happen); also the trips we have been on (Adventureland--too crazy w/ 12, 5 year olds w/ just the 2 of us); Cupcake Girlz (40 min. away from us); & rollerskating (half the girls were in tears b/c it was their first time on skates) we welcomed all the parents.

Yet for every trip we're on, we have to fill out the trip approval listing ALL names of both parents/children & tagalongs attending so that those people will be covered under their insurance.

This isn't related to your question, but I have to ask - what events are you doing 2-3 times a month? Thats impressive!

Also where are you doing day June camping? I'd love to take my girls...
