Re: moms of around 18 mth olds ...
DS is 17 months old...he understands more than he talks but says the following:
Dada Mommy Baba Baby No (to everything, whether the answer is yes or no ) Oh no Wow Whoa Plane Thank you (in his own language )
I can ask him to get things for me and he completely understands what I'm asking...so even though he doesn't have so many words, I'm not worried about it just yet.

Re: moms of around 18 mth olds ...
not a mom yet, but i'm a speech therapist. 18 months or so is usually when the real "explosion" of words tends to happen. children start to become like parrots and repeat everything they hear and really start to associate objects with the words. and usually by 2 or a little after, they start to put 2 words together. what is your child saying so far?? any words at all? any babbling?? let me know if you have any questions!

Re: moms of around 18 mth olds ...
At 18 months my daughter was saying A LOT but I think speech is her area of advancement.
We had made a list (aphabetically, yea I'm insane) and she had 138 words on the list, and a few phrases.
About 90 of the words were things that she said all the time, like thank you, cheese, drink, juice, peepee, things like that.
However I think somewhere around 20-words is more normal for that age, maybe even 50.

DD is 21 mths and only has about 20 words. She undserstands EVERYTHING and uses signs and points to what she wants. We had EI last week and they have not gotten back to us yet. They did say she was very advanced in her physical development - I thiink that is what they called it for running, jumping, climbing etc so that maybe the reson why her speech is slower coming.
Get her checked out if you are worried.

I'm a speech pathologist also and you should expect about 10-15 words at 18 months. 50 words actually aren't expected until 2 years old. Once they acquire a handful of words you should really start to see the language explosion.
My DS is pretty advanced in this area. I made a list too because I was curious to see how many words he actually had and he had about 200 words at 18 months and had started to combine words into 2 word phrases. Although some kids will definitely have way more than 10-15 words at this age, you shouldn't worry if yours doesn't. Feel free to FM me if you have any concer

I think DD has about 20 words she says everyday.
She understands everything that we say to her.
I have noticed in the past week - she is saying a new word every day
Some of them are: Mom Dada Daddy Casey Cheese Ernie bird Big Bird three dog sock yeah outside night night bye bye hi see ya Eye shoe shoes book what's that what's this who's that who's this
it could be more - this is all I can think of off the tope of my head - I don't write them down.

Ellie also understands alot more than she says but she says quite a few words and phrases now. She says most things in context now as opposed to just blurting out things dada mama No Oh no Uh oh I got it I did it Bye Bye Hi Hiya (thanks to mickey mouse clubhouse) chicken peas waffle eat more night night Thank you watch (for tv) most animal names and sounds they make she can also try to count to ten if you count with her Juice
And many more so I guess there's more than I realize.

Not much over here. She just cries all the time
I never really added up her words. But she has a lot. Nothing she strings together, but can say enough to get her point across.

Hmmm, Ava has probably over 200 words, easily and speaks in 2-3 word utterances/sentences. That being said, I think that just goes to show you the range that children this age have in their speech. The spectrum of what's "normal" is as varied as can be.

Now I feel ike Sara should have received services Her words are:
mama Sara Dada (rarely - uaually its mama ) doggie baby apple Hi Bye nana ( Bannana) Elmo T ( TV) want more you me mine Da (Yes) no bubbles juice cheese book I bite shoe jacket out up P ( pizza) pee pee baoon ( balloon) night night uh oh counts 1 2 3 thinks she says the abc's but is really not

I guess this is not bad - Sara is 21 months but rarely stings two words together. She does understand everything though.
