Moms of babies around 13 mos or btdt moms I have a q for you about "words"
So the best way for me to explain this is by example. DS says "baby" (more like bay-be or sometimes bay-bay) but, anyway, if he sees a pic of a baby in a book he will point and say baby - or if i hold up the flashcard pic he will say baby or if i ask - what is that. Now it seems to me almost definite when he does these things that it is not an accident and he clearly knows baby - HOWEVER, sometimes he will just say bay-be or bay bay bay - as part as his babble or randomly point to things that are NOT babies and say the same word. This is just one ex. b/c this is true of the few other words he says as well.
So my q is - what is this? Am I just being delusionial and he doesn't know what a baby is and is just getting really lucky? Does this even count as a word if he sometimes uses it randomly (although in a different way) for different things? Or is this just something they normally do at this age?
TIA!

It's hard to tell at his age but it's good that he has words - that's most important.
It sounds like he does recognize the word to an image - so he can identify. The times where he randomly says it...my guess would be those are the times he is just trying out his words. And that is good too..he needs to hear his voice, he needs to practice and it boosts his confidence to use real words.
Think about learning a foreign language...when you learn a words you want to use it as often as you can! So does he.

Re: Moms of babies around 13 mos or btdt moms I have a q for you about "words"
My daughter is 13 months and for the last two months she's been saying puppy and baby to everything. Recently she just started pointing to a baby and saying baby. She will also point to herself now and say baby so I'm thinking she knows. Now if I could get her to realize that everything is not a puppy.

I know exactly what you are saying b/c DS does this too - like he said Da-Da for like four months b/f he finally realized DH was Da-Da
But, this is different - it is actually the reverse. It's as if the recognition comes first and then he uses the word constantly. Like he never said "baby" - it was one of the words for my week last week and first he started being able to point to it in a story when I said it and then he started saying it - I mean, it could be a fluke but if I ask - point to the baby - he will literally scan the page b/f pointing to it and he always smiles when he does - and when i was just changing him before he pointed to the baby on the diaper package and got a huge smile and said baby - BUT, once he started saying it he says it alot and not just for baby. So now that your daughter identifies baby does she only use it in that context?

This is what DH has been saying - he says he likes to hear himself say it b/c its a new word like he's just practicing with it...hmmmmmm

He most definitely knows what a baby is....and is saying the word.
Just wait til he calls some guy in the mall Daddy...
Caden has a lot of words. But some of them sound exactly the same b/c he isnt finishing the word completely...Juice, Cheese, & Shoes sound pretty much the same but he knows what each of them are and uses them appropriately.

Oh yes we have this issue too! He only recently got the second syllable for baby - b/f that it was "Bay" which sounds the same as his word for "bear" and very simlear to his word for "burp" - yes, BURP, which was one of his first words thanks to DH And, that is one word he ONLY uses in context - thank god
But, wow that is a lot of words good for DS! that is amazing!

DS is 14 months. He also says "baby" A LOT. he will say it when he sees a baby or another child so i am pretty its intentional. but he also says "bye bye" which sometimes sounds like "baby". also we try to speak greek at home and "baba" is dad so he says that also.
im sure he is saying it intentionally when u see a baby, but maybe your DC is trying to say another word also that you often use at home?

I think it's very hard to know exactly what they mean at this age. DD is 13 months . She calls me deda(mama in georgian) and soemtimes calls me mama, (she also calls binky or a bottle mama sometimes) and she calls my DH dada. But she also says dada about so many things. She says dady instead of baby, she says dye-dye instead of bye bye but she says BABA when she wants her bottle/milk . she says dody=dogy, dedy=berdy. and so on so yeah it's hard to tell.
