Moms of Babies over 1 year old - sleeping question
DD is just about 16 months and we still hold her till she goes to sleep.
There was a point where she would fall a sleep on her own in the crib months ago - but that went out the window when she got sick and started teething (maybe its my exuse) but i really want her to soothe herself to sleep instead of being held.
She will scream her head off if we leave her in the crib alone - and this is not something i want when the new baby arrives in November.
Just wondering what your sleeping patterns are for your children over 1 year - are they falling asleep on their own? Do you hold them, rock them to sleep? Luckily she will sleep through the night - but getting her to sleep and nap on her own has become a problem if she isn't held. Please help. Should be start CIO again

Re: Moms of Babies over 1 year old - sleeping question
Ava us just over a year old, but has been putting herself to sleep since 8 months old. It was rough the first couple of nights having her CIO, but it lasted less than an hour the first night and maybe 20 minutes or so the next night. It has been wonderful since then. If you are not opposed to CIO, I would suggest doing it. It was a lifesaver for us. I also suggest getting a copy of Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems by Ferber. It really explains sleep associations and other reasons that your child may have trouble putting themselves to sleep.

Thank you!! i will definitely pick up this book - definitely looking to find a solution to this and not against CIO at all. Do you just put Ava in the crib - and she will fall asleep? does she signal when she is sleepy? This would be a lifesavor for us!

We have a really particular bedtime routine that we stuck to the first 3 months so that she really understood it was bedtime, that really helped. Now if we need to deviate from it, she's not phased at all. But we do our routine basically the same time every night, then we put her in her crib, and she usually rolls over and goes right to sleep. If not, she sings to herself or talks until she's ready to go to bed. It's pretty remarkable becuase I didn't think she would ever do it, but she does!

Re: Moms of Babies over 1 year old - sleeping question
I used a combo of techniques from Secrets of the Baby Whisperer and The No cry sleep solution when we went through a rough patch when she was 9-10 months old.
DD has been putting herself to sleep for naps, and bedtime since about 7 months old.
I just put her in her crib, tell her I love her, give her lovey and within 5-10 mins she's out cold. We have a rule that we will not let her "real" cry-tears, boogies etc. for more than 5 mins.
I hope you find something that works for you Good luck!
ETA: We also have an established bedtime routine that we start everynight around the same time and she goes to bed around the same time every night-of course unless we are out..

It didn't change for us because I started putting him in his crib awake at 4 months.
