Moms of babies w/ Reflux please help!! I feel like I am losing my mind!!

My DS is 12 weeks old and has been on Zantac for a little over a month. He started on 1 ML twice a day but was just increased to 1.3 ML. For the past 6 days I feel like his reflux has gotten worse and Zantac is no longer working. He is getting SO fussy at his night feeds- he is burping a TON- and the burps seem to hurt him and his breathe smells worse than ever. Anyone habe Zantac not work and was swicthed to something that was??? I called GI today and am so annoyed that I did not get a call back. I am feeling so overwhelmed b/c he has been miserable for past week and only wants to be held- and only wants to be held by me. I could cry!! Thank you!!!

Zantac doesn't always work for all. I would see if you they can switch him to Prevacid or Axid.

Maybe his dose needs to be increased? My ped put DS on Axid today and said as his weight increases the dose will need to be increased also.

My DS was about 6 weeks when I noticed his vomit smelling breath and all the other classic signs of reflux. He was put on zantac which he took for 2 weeks and it didnt help him. He was then switched to prilosec which he has been doing so much better on. It did take a few days to see a difference though. After about a week and a half the reflux was bothering him again and he had to have his dose increased from once to twice a day (he outgrew the once a day dose).

Our pediatric GI told us that zantac only works in about 60% of babies where prilosec works in about 95%. But for some reason they like to start with zantac.

I know its really hard, I feel your pain. DH and I have spent so many days and night rocking and walking DS and trying to console bc he is screaming form the reflux. He wouldnt even let us sit down with him, we had to be standing. It will get better though.

Thanks everyone!!! He does also have a milk allergy and is on Neocate. I feel so bad for him- from the day he was born he has had issues- was a premie- had milk allergy- has reflux and just got over RSV- finally thought things would get better for him and now reflux acting up! motherhood is harder than i EVER imagined. Thanks for your help!

I remember those days.... I really felt like I might have a breakdown from worry and lack of sleep.

Like the other posters said, Zantac does not work for everyone...there are other options. Our little guy needed Elecare as well.

After months of medicating our DS and giving him prescription formula I finally learned about ped. chiropractic care and how it can help with reflux. After about a month of visits, DS was off meds and special formula. If I knew then what I know now I would have seen the chiro. sooner. I really dislked medicating my son and tried to wean him from the meds unsuccesfully every month, hoping he had outgrown the reflux. Natural methods proved to be successful for us.

DS was switched to Axid on Feb 2nd. He was on Zantac but he hated the taste and would gag on it until he threw it up. He was taking 1ML 2X a day. Then about 2 weeks ago, I asked the Dr. to switch him to something else. He put him on Axid. He was taking 1ML 2X a day up until this past Friday when I had to call the dr because he had a severe flare up. He is now on 1ML 3X a day. He too has a severe milk protein/soy allergy and is on Elecare. Same thing as Neocate...It was so hard in the beginning. Just when we go the formula problem under control, the reflux kicked in full force...

My DS had reflux too. The thing that worked the best for him was adding rice cereal to his bottles. It's one of those tried and true old methods that definitely do work..

Have you tried that?

DD was originally supposed to be on Zantac, but because of insurance issues she's on Axid. It's definitely helped her. She takes 1 ml three times a day. To help her weight gain and reduce spit-up, she's also getting rice cereal in all her bottles. It seems to work for us! I hope your DS feels better. Also, my DS had cereal in all his bottles and that helped him a lot. It doesn't work for everyone, but it did in DS's case.
