moms of babies with reflux-update
what were the symptoms your baby was having, and what are you doing/giving them?
My DS is 5 wks and I'm starting to think he has reflux issues. - screams as soon as I lay him down - fights his bottle, where he used to gobble it down - makes these weird throaty noises - arches his back sometimes while I"m feeding him, or trying to lay him down He is not the baby I brought home from the hospital
I know it's not gas because he burps, farts with no problem. I'm taking him to the doc tomorrow to see what they say
TIA!!
UPDATE:
went to see the doc this morning, it is indeed reflux. we are trying the zantac, and will add rice cereal to his form and hopefully it works.

Re: moms of babies with reflux
Those are the exact symptoms my son had and he has reflux. He also had smelly farts, which is another sign.
My aunt thought he was colicky but i knew something else was going on with him. He was a very happy baby and then it was like a switch went off and he was miserable.
It sounds like reflux to me. We put my son on zantac and he's back to his normal self.

Re: moms of babies with reflux
same symptoms sounds like i wrote ur post...lol....she would also make gulping noises and gag/choke at time which was scary....make horrible faces after burping and sometimes even cry....sour breath and spitting up a lot....and of course all the others u mentioned.....we first changed her formula to enfamil ar which has a rice-like base which is thicker than a normal formula which would help to keep the food down so as not to come up in the throat .....it worked but she was still having many of the symptoms and it showed that she was better but not enough to make her the content quiet baby i brought home from the hospital....so a lil over a week ago we put her on zantac drops twice a day and of course contd the formula and she is doing well knock wood!
good luck with ur doc visit

Re: moms of babies with reflux
My son has/had reflux. Those are classic symptoms but the only one of those he had was the arching back while feeding. He was so tiny, yet so strong!!! He spit up a lot.

Re: moms of babies with reflux
My DS had the same symptoms at 2 weeks and it was silent reflux (he didn't spit up at all, rather he was burping it up and swallowing it.)
Anyway in addition to changing the formula, holding him upright, not burping too much, etc we tried Zantac (slight improvement), then tried Pepcid (no improvement), until we finally saw a specialist and started Prevacid. That was a life saver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck

Re: moms of babies with reflux
My DD had reflux as well.... Had being the operative word.
She would spit up.... all the time - caused me many a gray hair. I would be laying there, and all of a sudden I would hear her gasping... Why? B/C she had just spit up through her mouth and nose at the same time and couldn't breathe.
I took her to the Ped at around 2 weeks of age, and her ped (which I'm thankful for) didn't want to/didn't believe in automatically going the route of medicine.
He wanted to try giving her rice cereal in her bottle first. He told me to give her 1/2 tsp of rice cereal per ounce of form or BM that she was receiving. So, for a 4oz bottle, she would have 2 tsp of rice cereal in her bottle.
At 8 months, I can proudly say that my daughter no longer takes any kind of cereal in her bottles, and she VERY RARELY spits up any more!
Her formula was also changed at the time, but that was for gas issues - she was on Enfamil Lipil which was what was given in the hospital, but the ped told me that she was super gassy, and we were switched to Gentlease.
Good Luck!

Re: moms of babies with reflux
I will be taing DS to the dr. tomorrow b/c he is having the same symptoms in addition to projectily vomiting at times (about 5 times since he was born and he is 5 weeks old). He was also contipated which I hear is a symptom as well. I called the dr. yesterday and the nurse said that it sounds like he has the reflux but DS has to be seen by the dr. I will let you know what route of treatment they recommend tomorrow.

DS was under the care of a GI specialist for a combination of reflux and a milk protein allergy. He did receive treatment but it was very individualized because he had trouble tolerating some treatments. For example, he could not tolerate rice cereal in his milk. His system was not mature enough to digest it, so he would projectile vomit. Eventually, with the GI's help, we found a combination of Axid and Mylanta that helped but it was not a cure.

Re: moms of babies with reflux
DS would cry for his bottle, take a few sucks, start crying. I'd remove the bottle, then he'd cry for it back. This would happen over and over and it was silent reflux. We started putting cereal in his bottle and put him on Zantac and he did really well after that.

Re: moms of babies with reflux-update
Oh good! I was wondering how you made out at the ped office.
Yes we saw an immediate difference around the 24 hour mark after starting the zantac.
