Moms of babies with reflux, can you help me figure this out?
Hi Moms.
I have a 5 week old who is spitting up quite a bit. I'm wondering if he has reflux but I don't know anything about it and was hoping someone could give me some info or point me in the right direction as to where to find good, reliable info.
My DS was initially on Similac Advance but it was changed when he was about 2 1/2 weeks because he was having trouble pooping (but was not spitting up).
He was changed to Enfamil Gentlease which now has him pooping 1 x day but he is spitting up big time. The doctor finally said to add some rice to the formula but it's not really helping. He spits up a lot in his sleep. I don't see him crying when he spits up and he doesn't arch his back but he does cry when we take the bottle out and try to burp him.
I noticed today that his little face is breaking out along with his neck and right ear. I know its the spit up.
Does this sound like reflux? Something else? Do I change formulas? The ped thinks its fine but I don't.
I'm not sure what to do. Have called the ped lots of times and am thinking of switching. TIA!

My DS was diagnosed with reflux when he was 5 weeks old. he spit up quit a bit and, on 4 occassions, it was projectile. He never arched his back but he would only eat an ounce or two from time to time. He also had some trouble with the poop and gas. We put him on the Gentlease and it seemed to work but he was still spitting up. Dr. said to add cereal to his formula. He said 1 teaspoon per ounce. I thought it was a lot so I only added 1 teaspoon for a 4 ounce bottle. It did the trick.
For your DS, maybe try adding some more cereal. Make sure he is getting enough through the nipple b/c it makes it hard for the formula to come out. Also, give him some mylicon. Sometimes the gas makes them spit up as well. It usually takes anywhere between 5-10 days for a baby's tummy to decide if it can tolerate the formuala. How long has he been on the gentlease?

both my children were Reflux babies...
with DS we used previcid for a while and then just did the cereal in the bottle.. the previcid was making him wake up in the middle of the night. he never arched his back or seemed like he was in pain.
Now my DD is a projectile spitter upper. we have her on Enfamil AR or Similac Sensative RS. since she is gaining weight the dr said i didnt have to worry about the previcid. she doesnt arch either. she still spits up but it doesnt seem to bother her.
DS slept in his swing (it prevented him from spitting up while sleeping)
DD we just put a pillow under her mattress and that seems to be working ok.

I would recommend making an appointment with a ped. GI. They are really the reflux experts. My LO was diagnosed with reflux at six weeks and began Zantac and Elecare formula. There was a very informative thread on this board this morning about reflux with a lot of information. Go back a few pages and you will find it.
If you decide to consult with a ped. GI and will travel to Babylon I highly recommend Dr. Gold.

My DD didn't have reflux, she just spit up a lot. She spit up every time she ate. Sometimes it was a little, sometimes it seemed like it was everything she ate. It didn't seem to bother her and she was gaining weight and stayed in between the 90-95% for weight. She did sleep in the bouncy seat for the first 3 months because she slept better in there and she always spit up if she was laying flat. At around 5 months, she stopped spitting up.
Some babies are just spitters.
