moms of bigger babies, convertible seat for a 4 mth old not have enough head support?
Moms of bigger babies, when baby seemed too tight in the Infant carrier, did you switch to the convertible seat then? What age was that and did you find that there wasn't enough head support? DD is 4 mths, and is just too tight in her infant carseat plus it's so heavy with her in it. I put her in the convertible seat and to me it lacks some head support.
Anyone else have this issue? The convertible seat says it can be used with a baby who weighs as little as 5 lbs, but I just don't see how this is possible with the head wobbling around, side to side...

Both my kids went to the convertible seat at 4 and 5 months. The infant seat was just too small for them (I had a Peg Perego Viaggio). The convertible seat was so upright, even in the recline position!! (They both went to Marathons). They used to sleep with their heads straight down on their chest! But they were fine... Not sure what else you can do if you move them.

Same with us! I had the Peg Viaggio and he was squished so tightly in there. We moves into the Evenflo Triumph at around 5 months. Had no problem with holding his neck up which was good. We did, however, recline the sit a bit so it wasn't totally upright so that helped a lot. What a happy baby he was from the moment we went into the Triumph.

I too have a Britax Marathon. It is reclined enough, so her head doesn't fall forward. But I noticed it moves side to side more than I think it should. But she is just so tight in the Britax Companion infant car seat, she cries and it's dreadful to put her in.
I am surprised if they say a 5 lb baby can go in there, there isn't a head support?

Re: moms of bigger babies, convertible seat for a 4 mth old not have enough head support?
DS was always a big baby, but didnt hit the seat maximums until about 6.5 months so that is when I moved him to his convertible car seat.
Yes he was heavy in the seat but I only carried him a few feet at a time and I never used the handle I always used 2 hands on the bottom of the seat so it wasnt bad. Also at that age he was still falling asleep in his seat so I liked being able to pop him in and out of the car w/o waking him.
I can agree with you though I dont think there is enough head support, is there one of those head support "pillows" that might help?

You can always get a head support for the car seat.

DD was 9.7 when she was born and we used the Graco Snugride until she was 7 months when we switched to the Britax Marathon. I stopped taking the infabt seat out of the car when she was around 5-6 months bc it got too heavy.
My Britax doesn't budge, so you can probably get make it tighter.

I was just saying to myself today that I have to move him to the convertible...I think my first son switched around this age as well.

Re: moms of bigger babies, convertible seat for a 4 mth old not have enough head support?
Unfortunately some of the infant cariers are not acommodating for larger children. On average, regardless the brand, with the exception of the 30+ pound seats, kids are outgrowing their carrier type seats as early as 7 months. Few earilier, some later.
That is where the convertable seats come in. Unfortunately if they do not come with a head support, you cannot add one. After market products of any kind are nott recommended. A roled up receiving blanket often times works.
If the convertable seat is upright, then it is not installed properly. If the childs head is falling forward, there is a chance the seat is not installed properly.
Have the seat checked.

We switched Jack at just over 2 months bc he hated the infant seat. I did find that his neck would fall and I propped it with those neck things they sell and also used receiving blankets.
Also - it wasn't for that long - maybe a month or so!

Re: moms of bigger babies, convertible seat for a 4 mth old not have enough head support?
Both my boys were moved in their 5th month. They hit the 26in height limit of my seat at their 3.5 mo visit but I kept their a little longer (their legs still were within seat). By 5 mos both boys were nearly 20lbs so they had to be moved. Yes, the head support wasn't as good since it isn't as reclined but I don't recall any issues. I have a Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 convertible car seat.

Thank you! But her head isn't falling forward. It bobbles from side to side. That's my concern. What do you think of that?

That's what the rolled up receiving blanket is for. You roll it up into a sausage, then put it over their heads, so it is next to each ear, and on top of their heads. It shouldn't be behind their head at all, just next to it.

We bought the Britax Decathlon (it's like the Marathon) but it has all the insert padding for a NB. It's removable later on.

But can't that risk falling onto their face while you are driving, and smother them?

No, the blanket does not smother the child.
