Question for my brother about an 11 week old...
What could be some causes for an 11 week old to cry constantly and sleep a maximum of 5 hours a day? My brother has a now 11 week old and for weeks now, she's been constantly crying/screaming. Well, not so much the screaming anymore, but she was for like 2 weeks nonstop. The Ped put her on Zantac (sp?) and that was it. It helped briefly, but now she's back to crying and not sleeping constantly. The mom BF's exclusively, but is a vegetarian. She wasn't this bad when she was smaller, but the past few weeks she has been what seems to be in pain most of the day and night. He's taking her back again to the Ped's office this afternoon, but calls me for suggestions on what could be going on? She really hasn't slept for more than 5 hours total per day. Has anyone experienced this? My boys were never like that. Thanks!

It could be she isnt tolerating something the mother is eating ! Does she drink regular milk( meaning the mother)?

That's what I was thinking, but my brother said that she wasn't like this in the beginning and the mom is eating the same things. She only started screaming a few weeks ago. The mom drinks Soy milk.

Re: Question for my brother about an 11 week old...
I would suggest to your brother that he set up an appointment with a pediatric GI specialist for the baby. Zantac did NOTHING for Alexa's reflux... she would cry day and night.
The GI specialist we saw at Yale said that zantac is for very mild cases of reflux and doesn't always work.
I think having a specialist evaluate teh baby would be the first step.
The mom should evaluate her diet. SOy can cause A LOT of GI problems in a breastfed baby. ALso a lot of vegetarians get their protein source from beans which can cause gas issues in teh baby.
Even though things were fine until about 3 weeks teh baby can start developing sensitivities to food at any time and things can flare up!
Good luck!! I know how hard it is to have an unhappy baby!

Milk allergy/intolerance. The mother needs to look at her diet. Dairy and soy might have to go.
