Moms of DC who were 23 inches+ at birth.. Q. (Outgrew Carseat at 3 Mos)

It seems my DS is outgrowing his carseat already!

My DS is 3 months old. Did anyone else go threw this at such an early age?

We have this one
External Image ...

We think our DS is about 18 lbs now and he last measured 26 inches over a month ago.

We have this Convertible Car Seat

Is it safe to switch the car seats at this age? This is going to suck now because I can't just take him out of the car in the car seat and snap it onto my stroller Chat Icon

Also walking to and from the house to the car I'll have to hold him Chat Icon when it was safer for him in the carseat...

I had to switch my son out at about 2 months. He HATED the infant car seat and screamed like a lunatic every time he was in the car.

He's a big boy- was born at almost 10lbs and 23inches long...he's over 18lbs now at three months - so I guess it was uncomfortable for him.

We put him in the Marathon and driving with him has been a pleasure ever since. I'm not sure what your carseat requirements are - check it out on the website. THe Marathon goes from 5lbs to 65lbs so we were fine with it.

Yes, it's safe to use the convertible seat at 3 months. Most of them can be used from birth, but they say that it's safer for newborns to be in the carrier and it's also more convenient. We moved Nate to a convertible seat at 3.5 months bc he out grew the carrier.

I'm asking our pediatrician at the next appt. I feel horrible that he's losing out on all the newborn stuff.Chat Icon

Convertible seats are from 5lbs to 30 I believe, so yes it's fine and both are equally safe. The only reason to use an infant carrier is for convenience really.

Just chiming in with the same info as the APs. Every convertible seat I've looked at starts at 5 lbs. It's no safer carrying him in the car seat from the car to the house. There have been some infant seats that have been recalled because the handle broke when someone was carrying their DC in the seat! Chat Icon

Most infant seats top out at 20-22 lbs, so he's close to the weight limit also.

Julia was 22 inches at birth, but we had to move her into a bigger carseat at 5 months, she was just to big for it and I couldn't carry her anymore.

Both my kids were on the bigger side of the curves (95% and above) and they outgrew the infant seat at 3 months, so we moved them to the Britax Marathon at about 4 months. We had no problem with the transition. We just made sure it was rear facing until 1 year.

You can see if you can exchange your seat for the Graco safe seat. It was made purposely to hold a baby longer. I believe it's limit goes up to 30lbs and 32 inches. It fits right into the graco frame stroller too. We loved this seat and finally retired it about a week before Jack's 1st b-day. (He was 28.2 lbs and 31 in at 12 months). HTHChat Icon

I also used this car seat.
It does go up to 30lbs and 32 inches - we just changed DD from it to another at 15 1/2 months.

I think you'll be fine with the convertable seat...and your baby will probably be much happier!

My sister just had a baby 2 weeks ago and didn't want to bother with the infant seat, so her 7 pound little girl is in a convertable seat since birth!

I purposely chose this seat b/c I kind of knew DS would be a big boy..I like having a carrier for them until they are able to sit up in the shopping cart. My eldest daughter grew out of the smaller car seat at 5 months.

Re: Moms of DC who were 23 inches+ at birth.. Q. (Outgrew Carseat at 3 Mos)

We originally got 2 Snugride carseats. One for each car. We had only installed the one in my car. At 2 months, I realized there was no need to install the one for DH's car. DS will not last too long in his infant carseat anyway. So we returned the other one.

I bought 2 convertible car seats. I got 2 Britax (because it was on sale).

We are going to install one of them in DH's car this weekend.

DS is 3.5 months.

All convertible carseats are designed to start at 5Lbs (birth). You don't have to have an infant carseat when they are infants. A convertible is just fine.

Thanks everyone for your responses..Chat Icon

We have 2 of the convertible seats, received off of my registry. We are going to have to install one of them today, since tomorrow we are going to the Peds.
