Not constant, I wonder if she is uncomfortable? There is certainly self exploration, but to do it at school is less common I would imagine -- at age 4 they are more socially aware.

Try telling her "its ok to do that in private but not in front of other people" Have you had that talk with her yet? Whenever she does it with you, I'd redirect her to the bathroom or her bedroom.

Re: moms of girls 4 yo and older...

my friend has a daughter who constantly does that. It started around 2 1/2 when she was potty training. I always thought she just had to go to the potty but she still does it to this day and she's 4. I asked her about it and she said the doctor said nothing is physically wrong with her and she will out grow it.

Not touching, but for a while she was complaining it hurt so I took her to the Ped and it turned out she had a rash. Doc suspected a yeast infection, but the test was negative, so we just used some butt paste which cleared it up pretty quickly.

I would check to see if the area is red, and if so, take her to the Ped to rule out an infection.

DD#1 is 9 and she never did this. She did have a few UTI's when she was younger and complained of pain.

Re: moms of girls 4 yo and older...

miki does it alot (she is only 3) so much that my sitter told me not to bring her in dresses anymore (too much of an easy access for her)

I just tell her to make sure her hands are clean and that she should not be doing that in front of people

I DO notice that she is a bit red down there so I think she may not be wiping well when she goes and that is causing her some irritation (itching, pain, etc)

I have used diaper cream when it seems bothersome
