Moms of girls who use barettes (warning)
This is a sad story I read on babycenter. I do take Mianda's hairbows out for naps and bedtime so just want to remind everyone to do this as well.
I just got off the phone with my MIL. A cousin of hers just lost her 14 month old daughter! cry Pleas keep this family in your thoughts. The Mom's name is Andrea, Dad is Sam and the baby was Emily.
Andrea put the baby down for a nap yesterday afternoon and was excited because the baby was napping much longer than usual. She said she was getting a ton of stuff done and kept thinking - please just sleep a little longer!! She finally went to check on Emily after about 3 1/2 hours - she usually naps around 2 hours. Andrea said she just figured that Emily was getting sick or something and needed extra sleep. I can't even imagine the guilt she must feel.
Well, when she went in the room, she noticed something was wrong because Emily always sleeps curled on her side and this time she was prone on her back. She was not breathing. Andrea immediately called 911 and when the medics got there, they said she was gone. cry
THEY FOUND HER BARRETTE IN HER THROAT!! They don't know if she purposfully took it out of her hair and was chewing on it or if it came out and she somehow accidentally inhaled it.
OMG! I am completely in tears right now just thinking about the number of times that I put Cora down for her nap with a barrette in. So, please, keep this in mind when putting your LOs down for sleep.
Please pass this along to anyone with little ones. I'll be posting on my Birth Board also.

That is so awful. I always take her clips out but it is hard because I feel bad for her when her hair is in her face.
I use rubberbands now.

I thought about that but I use the soft ones so she can pull those out too. I use those terry type scrunschies at bedtime, i think that would be OK? Maybe I need to use the old fashioned rubber bands at bed time.

That's so sad!
I never put her to nap or bed with anything in her hair (not that she has any anyway!). I won't even drive with them in her hair because she could pull them out and put them in her mouth while I am driving and I would never know (there is a mirror, but I can't look in it all the time and drive safely too).

That is horrible. I wish Sydney didnt have so much and need to wear things in her hair all the time. I rarely use barettes, I mainly use rubberbands but I worry about them too.

Re: Moms of girls who use barettes (warning)
Honestly this has always scared the sh*t out of me. I have never put my kids down with anything in their hair. I have even hesitated to put barrettes or scrunchies in their hair once they were aware of them and could pull them out.

How sad!!! My DD was never big on keeping the barettes in when she was very small so this never really came up for us. How truly horrible for that poor family.

Re: Moms of girls who use barettes (warning)
Peyton is constantly putting her barettes in her mouth. I have to be very cautious of this as well.
I started removing them from naps awhile ago.
Sorry to hear about your MIL's cousin. That's so sad.
