moms of newborns with acid reflux?UPDATE #2

kaylie has been having issues during the day mostly where she just cries sporadically throughout the day even if she naps she still has moments where she cries while she is sleeping....when she eats she spits up a bit and she can be gassy so ive been giving her mylicon..... but she can burp or spit up and make horrible faces like it tastes bad and she does the arching the back thing and cries right after .....we have our second ped visit on thurs of next week so im curious....those of u with dc with acid reflux how did u know and what were the symptoms like? tiaChat Icon

ETA UPDATE ok so i didnt wait for the thurs visit bc i just got to nervous.....i have acid reflux and know what it can do in adults and when i went online and read some horror stories i said this is crazy i have to go in now and get this checked out......also thanks to o8babysurprise via fm she found some symptoms of acid relfux and i realized after readubg them that kaylie had almost all the symptoms listed!.....the doc agreed after hearing her symtoms that she does indeed have ar so she changed the formula from simliac advance to enfamil ar we started it theminute we got home and its been three feddings since....she seems so much better spit up wise thats for sure! but it seems like she is still bothered by gas and maybe even trying to pushout a #2 so i gave her mylicon which worked last night im kind of scared that the iron in the formula is doing this and could lead to constipation but well see......i have the one month original doc visit on thurs of next week so well see how she is by then....cross our fingersChat Icon ....thank u everyone that posted their experiences it has helped me greatly and proved that i was right about kaylieChat Icon

UPDATE #2 ok so u ladies were soooooooo right....she woke u after the last feeding crazzzzzed....screaming crying......and pushing.....kicking her legs.....i felt awful for her......it was two hrs like this and i was doing everything i even started massaging her back/butt and she got some relief but then it was back tothe painful crying....i actually started crying with her....Chat Icon it was soooo horrible to see her like that and this has been so many days of crying like that bc of the acid reflux...i guess i thought it was gonna be some miracle cure....although the ar seems ok the gas/poop situation is NOT....but u ladies did say it was an issue and to give it time so i am i hope things work out bc its getting so hard to watch herChat Icon

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?

Kristina didn't have the arching back, but every time that she ate, she would spit up. She would be laid down, and she would spit up... it was horrible.

Her ped @ the time had me put .5 tsp of rice cereal in her formula per ounce.

So.... If she was drinking a 4oz bottle, she was having 2 tsp of RC per bottle.

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?

Sounds like acid reflux to me, both my girls had it as infantsChat Icon

Def mention it to PED..meds are no biggie, they just take the pain out of the reflux so when she spits up it doesn't hurt them.

My girls were on pepcid, then that didn't work and we onto prevacid.

made a world of difference in mood, behavior, sleeping...But not in the amount of spit up.

My ped doesn't give cereal to babies under 6 months old for any reason, the risks of allergies, obesity, diabetes outweigh the benefits i was told. But that's just my PED. Def mention it, i'd call the PED instead of waitingChat Icon

Good luckChat Icon hope she feels better.

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?

oh boy do you have my condolences.
my first dd had reflux and colic for one year,

the twins both had reflux-max still at 18 months can vomit.
They are on Neocate. There were other issues too.
Jake stopped Immed.max..had to outgrow it...
Now he vomits maybe...1-2 x a month or def when he had a backdrip.
Did your doc suggest a diff formula?
We didn't do meds/

edited to add--the cereal helped somewhat but not a heck of alot at all.

good luck!Chat Icon

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?

My son has acid reflux. We figured it out somewhere around 4 weeks old and these were his symptoms at the time:

-he arched his back and throws his head back
-he cried in the middle of a feeding
-He used to eat 3-4 ounces at a time and then became more like 1, maybe 2 ounces.
-was irritated shortly after feedings (he would wake up an hour and a half after a feeding and scream bloody murder. he used to sleep 3-4 hours at a time)
-his farts smell (yes that really is a sign)
-he cried immediately when he's laid flat
-he stiffens his legs
-At the time, we couldn't put him in his crib at night and would only sleep in his rocker.

He is now on Alimentum and on zantac three times a day. Both have worked beautifully! Chat Icon

ETA: i knew something was going on with him because he was a very easy happy baby and then all of a sudden out of nowhere he was miserable!!!

*Also i know plenty of people who would have their child sleep in their car seat because it was the only way the child was comfortable sleeping because of the reflux. See if that makes a difference. Chat Icon

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?

DD was diagnosed with gastritis, not reflux, and had/has colic. She would scream nearly every waking minute (thankfully that has ended!), would stiffen while eating, scream while eating, spit up a lot, would spit up a hour after eating and it would look somewhat digested, had very smelly gas often and she would scream with it, she would scream with hiccups, she would scream with burps too, etc. Our doctor had us switch formulas (Alimentum worked) and we have her on Mylanta. Call your doctor and speak to her/him about it. Trust your Mommy instincts!

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?

def mention to ped

dd's symptoms were

spit-up (big time and constant)
discomfort - back arching
had to be kept on an incline at all times or held upright

we saw a ped GI specialist and she was eventually put on prevacid and had cereal added to bottle because the sensitive formulas weren't helping her and she was not gaining weight

she's been off med completely at 9 months

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?

my baby was colic and had acid reflux. The ped. put her on a small dose of zantac liquid and we went through 6 formulas before ending up on nutramigen which was a godsend. I noticed Ava would spit up constantly and cry after like it hurt.. she also would actually choke on the acid in her throat and her lips turned blue once and scared the daylights out of me. The ped. noticed right away once we brought her in. She too arched her back and would be stiff as a board and just cry.. i think that was colic. She no longer did that once the formula was changed and was on her meds. Mylicon didnt do anything for her. Im not sure if the arching of the back was colic or reflux but if i had to guess i think for my DD it was the colic which caused her to do that. Today she is 3-1/2 months old and she had a colic bout today and i gave her a cammomile bath and even gave her about half an ounce of chamomile tea and she was so calm after her bath and she fell right asleep. FM me if you need any help or suggestions :) Sorry such a long response! Goodluck though!

Oh that is great Jen!!! Give the formula some time - it takes a while for their little systems to get used to the change! I hope that ithelps and that Kaylie gets some relief!!!! Way to listen to your mommy instincts!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?UPDATE

Glad that you're trying a new formula and that you decided not to wait.

I will say that my ds had constipation problems, which is why we had to switch formulas 3 times. We went from similac advanced to enfamil gentlease and now on alimentum. Now with the alimentum, he doesn't have any pooping issues and now goes once a day.

Re: moms of newborns with acid reflux?UPDATE

Hope it all works out for you.

FYI - give it a few days for the formula to really kick in.

I changed Arianna to Gentlease (thanks to the ladies here) and it took almost a week but finally her gas got less painful and I'm so grateful for that!!!

Well i'm sure changing the formula will help, but i can't see it helping that much with the reflux. Although i'm no doctor. Chat Icon

But i wouldn't wait too long if she's not getting much better. Chat Icon
