How often do you give money to your kids to eat out and how much do you give? Does it come from their own money (job/allowance)?

Re: Moms of teens

when DS was a teen, i gave:

* weekly amount for lunch money (don't remember the amount)
* $10 to burn as he wanted.

if he wanted/needed anything more, he had to work for it:
* extra chores
* recycle cans/plastic
* coke reward codes for free movie tickets

Thanks the reason i ask is my daughters are both out in neighborhood a lot now that summer is here. We have lots of places to eat. I tell them come home and eat and then go out but just like for adults its the social aspect of it. Have to admit it allows me to not think about what they will eat especially when i am not home.

When school was in session, mine was working three different jobs. Since two of them involved getting kids off bus/tutoring, they are over now. She has one weekly babysitting gig left. So she uses that money first and if she asks me for money, I usually give it to her without argument (within reason). I'd say anywhere from 15-20 week maybe. But since she's home from school, I'll ask her to do one or two things around the house for me also. So its give and take.

If you work and she is home what does she eat?

We do 20.00 a week - if something special is going on or she is on vacation weeks from school it generally ends up being more

In the summer we do around $20 a week, sometimes more. They are always wanting to walk to Starbucks, Ralph's, Subway and the like. They do random chores asked of them so I think it is OK. I try to get them to eat meals at home and walk out for treats/snacks (ice cream/icees) At home they make bagel bites, quesadillas, grilled cheese or I make pasta salad with grilled chicken the day before for them to eat.

Re: Moms of teens

I’m not a mom, but when I was a teen, I worked for my money. If I asked for money, then I would not get it. My parents were quite strict with this. It taught me a lot about managing money when I started working (I was twelve/thirteen when I got my working papers; my bike got stolen and I had to buy a new one).

They gave me an allowance based on jobs around the house. It was $10. The going rate is probably $20 nowadays. I also did get a lot of help with the jobs I had to do.

She will make herself a sandwich, soup, or leftovers. Sometimes she will go with a friend to Panera or something. She's a big BPJ fan, that makes it easy.

I think thats my issue. My kids have very diverse palates and wont just eat PBJ or grilled cheese. I spoiled them in this way I guess.
