Moms of Toddlers - How many TRUE decent sized and quality meals...(MAJOR UPDATE IN OP!!!)

...Does you DC get in a day. For us, breakfast is her best meal, but lunch and dinner just flat out stink. Its a behavioral thing I know, and I know she's thriving. I also know the daily allowances and serving sizes for toddlers are actually VERY small but still, I always wonder if she's getting enough food. She's always maintained her weight percentile at 10%.

So I guess I want to know if your toddlers gorge at EVERY meal or do they only have 1 or 2 solid meals a day.

Abby can go all day and NEVER ask for food. I wish I had that issue.

MAJOR UPDATE:

Abby just asked me to make "Beckist" which is how she says "Breakfast". So I asked her if she was hungry and wants to eat. She answered with a resounding "YES!!!" Granted she slept too late to have lunch, but this is progress. DH is getting dinner as we speak!

DS eats one solid meal a day, usually lunch. He'll eat pretty well for breakfast, but lunch he'll really eat. Dinner is eh.

Re: Moms of Toddlers - How many TRUE decent sized and quality meals...

He eats a pretty good breakfast and Lunch, but dinner is horrible. He has his good days when he eats a good dinner too, but not very often. Some days, none of his meals go very well. He used to be a really good eater, but now he is pretty picky.

I try to limit snacks 2 hours before dinner, and it does help a little, but not much.

We don't go by daily - we go by weekly Chat Icon If it's not fruit or yogurt, Cai is very resistant.... I would say he has 3 good, solid meals a week. Everything else is just grazing or snacks - all healthy stuff....

Re: Moms of Toddlers - How many TRUE decent sized and quality meals...

Depends on the day.

DD is a peanut, but can pack it away when she is hungry. Some days she will ask for something specific, other days I ask her if she wants nuggies before school. And she must be hungry because she will eat 3 of them in just a few minutes.

Shaylie's best meal is breakfast. She rarely gives me a hard time. Lunch is so so. Dinner can be a nightmare.

I hope this doesn't make you feel bad, but 3.

Jack has oatmeal & applesauce during the week and pancakes with strawberries and banana on the weekends for breakfast. Each meal is always followed by dry cheerios.

At school he has a snack of fresh fruit and puffs or earths best crackers

lunch is usually a sandwich of some sort. cheese, lunch meat & cheese, PB&J, sunflower seed butter & jelly, apple butter & banana.

comes home from school or after nap on wknds...has an apple and some crackers or maybe a pack of fruit snacks

dinner: for the most part has what we're eating. If it's something fancy that he won't eat, I'll make him a chicken apple sausage with some cucumber slices or a hotdog or some gerber toddler raviolis or a chicken/turkey stew. I know they're a bit high in sodium, but they're full of veggies and good protein. Dinner is usually followed by gerber crunchies or puffs.

He has a cup of milk with breakfast and dinner and has water with lunch. He's not too big on juice which is just fine with me.

Having said all this......he was born off the charts 9lbs 11oz, 22in and has consistently stayed around the 97th %ile since then and is now four

He does give me a hard time trying new things but once I get a bite in him, he's usually good about it. sometimes it can be near impossible and we end up with a standoff where he has to take one bite and can have something else, but he must try it. he usually likes it Chat Icon

I've stopped fighing with her on breakfast and lunch, but I don't give in when it comes to dinner.

Breakfast right now is our worst meal. I've taken to just letting her eat a snack cup of cheerios while running around the house lately, because I can't stand the drama queen tantrums she throws that early in the morning.

ETA: She DOES though eat 3 solid meals the 2 days per week she goes to daycare though. Chat Icon

Re: Moms of Toddlers - How many TRUE decent sized and quality meals...

Its relieving to see we are not alone. Abby actually eats much better in day care -she mimics her peers - which is one reason I am glad she is returning this week. I don't feed her poorly, in fact she actually is intrigued by and asks for green veggies calling them all "pickles"Chat Icon and the truth is, she's not picky, she just is not interested in the entire eating process. The fight is not trying new thingsm rather just getting what ever she DOES like, in her mouth.

I guess somebody's kid has to be small - I guess I didn't figure it would be mine with obesity on both sides of the family.

Re: Moms of Toddlers - How many TRUE decent sized and quality meals...

I go more weekly than daily but I would say it averages out to 1 truly decent meal a day.

Every meal is a struggle though which usually ends in me feeding him.

He refuses to eat or self-feed but then will insist on snacks all day because he is hungry and throws tantrums when I don't give in, so I'd rather be feeding my son @ 2 1/2 than have him throwing tantrums and eating junk all day.

Us too. . . My son is great eater.. .although we have our days.
Mornings usually consist of cereal w/ milk, oatmeal, french toast sticks, pancakes, waffles, or eggs and cheese always with a fruit.
Yogurt for morning snack
Lunch is usually a sandwich, mac and cheese, pasta, or some left overs with a fruit and sometimes a veggie.
then for an afternoon snack ... he has snacky things i.e. goldfish, cookies, etc.
Dinner is usually whatever we are eating. a protien, a grain, a veggie and he has a fruit for dessert.
We have a whatever is in front of you you eat rule (minus if we know he doesn't like it) If he doesn't eat his sandwich for lunch it becomes his afternoon snack and he doesn't get his snack. Same with mornings. Dinner is if you don't eat it it is lost. That being said, he is a horrible milk drinker so I try to get a lot of cheese and yogurt into him. He barely gets 8 oz a day and that is forcing it!

This is Sadie. She eats nothing. I don't stress about it. She asks for fruit, applesauce and yogurt. She will eat pancakes, pizza, cheese, and occasionally cold cuts turket, but VERY small amounts.

Most days I'm lucky if I get dd to eat 1 good meal. There are the very occasional days (like once every couple of weeks) where she will eat 3 good meals.

She was never a good eater, but she is growing.

We have that too, if its in front of her and she doesnt eat it, there are no substitutes. BUT this happens a lot. She just doesn't like the process of eating. She'd rather be doing something else.

She eats breakfast well because its the longest stretch of tme she goes without food and shes just hungry.

DD is almost 16 months

She eats a great full breakfast

Lunch is good, not as good as breakfast though

Dinner is very so so...most days, not that much, some days lots some days nothing, but its ok with me.

I think eating more earlier in the day is healthy so I have no problem with it, 2 out of 3 meals is great!

I can count on breakfast being good - oatmeal & fruit, or yogurt & cereal. She fills up and it's healthy stuff (except for the occasional frozen pancake). Everything else is a crap shoot. She's certainly not wasting away, though, so I'm not too worried. Just frustrated - I know how you feel.

Re: Moms of Toddlers - How many TRUE decent sized and quality meals...

What's that?

haha

AJ eats what she'll eat when she wants to eat it. I figure as long as the stuff going into her is pretty healthy and mostly rounded out then I'm good with it.

Strawberries and a piece of bread for lunch? Sure.. enjoy

salmon, green beans and oranges for breakfast one day? Why not?

If she'll eat it, then I'll let her.

Then there are days where I swear Daycare is a lying sack.. because she RARELY eats at home as much as they say she does there.

*shrug*

She's gaining weight, active, happy and not shy to ask for food or say no when she's not hungry.

Same for us for the most part. My issue is mostly timing. They wake around 8:45 so have breakfast between 9:15-9:30. Then they nap 11:30-1:30 or so. Usually have lunch at 2-2:30 then dinner at 5:30(which is probably too close to lunch.) When they don't eat a good meal, I try to have them eat yogurt or cheese. If they ask for snacks after that they get fruit.

DD eats fairly well. Typical day . . . Oatmeal for breakfast; yogurt for morning snack; PB&J on whole wheat for lunch; fresh fruit for afternoon snack; and pasta w/ butter, some veggies & bread for dinner.

My sister has the same exact problem with her son. Breakfast he eats great and the rest of the day is a nightmare. Her ped. said that as long as he gets one good meal a day, the rest is just a bonus!
She'll eat when she's hungry, I promise!

We're lucky if she eats one good meal a day. She's been living on carbs lately.

Usually breakfast is her best meal, but only if she eats a couple of hours after waking. If we feed her too soon after waking, she doesn't eat anything.

Same here with the cheerios in a cup lol. Breakfast is by far the WORST. Lunch is hit or miss...some days he eats good, some days he doesn't. Dinner is pretty good, he usually finishes most or all of it, but there are days where he'll barely eat it. I don't stress...he's built like a linebacker, so he's obviously getting enough somehow.Chat Icon

Re: Moms of Toddlers - How many TRUE decent sized and quality meals...

3, on most days. We have to encourage her to eat some things, but she has come FAR with age...very far. She won't try certain veggies/fruits still, but her common ones she will eat regularly when served. Meats, dairy, veggies/fruit....again, not the biggest variety of fruits/veggies, but she gets 2 fruits and 2 veggies a day, at least 1 protein, a few whole grain servings, and lots of dairy (2 cups of milk and lots of cheese, sometimes a yogurt).

It has been a LONG road for us though....it should get better for you Chat Icon
