Moms of winter babies

Hi Everyone-
I just moved over, DS was born 12/12.
My Ped. said not to take my son out for 4 months due to germs, colds and the flu. What did you Drs. tell you, just wondering if he is being overly cautious.
Thanks

Re: Moms of winter babies

wow, 4 months. My DD was born in April last year and Dr. told me then after a month I could take her out. She suggeted if it was cold to go during the day to the mall when there are less people there, but not to be out for a really long time. I needed to get out of the house, so that was great she told me that.

Re: Moms of winter babies

4 months is a really really really long time.
My DS is 8 weeks old and my DR. said to do whatever I need to do but obviously make good choices. For example, when I drop my 4 year old off at preschool, we're in and out-no hanging and chatting like other moms. But we've been to the mall a bunch of times and to playdates.
I'd go nuts if I stayed in!

Wow that is long..Chat Icon My son was born 12/28/05 and I was out (to IL's) at one week old and out to stores at 3 weeks old. I couldnt stay inside all winter I would have died! Colic/Acid Reflux + Indoors all day every day WOULD = INSANITY!!!Chat Icon I would think taking your baby to the stores but not allowing anyone near him would be fine. Good luck. and Congrats!Chat Icon

Re: Moms of winter babies

Steven was born 11/17. My ped said to wait 8 weeks before bringing him to malls and stores where I iwll be spending lots of time. But, that I could take him for walks and quick trips to the store, etc.

With that said, I brought him to BRU the second day we got homeChat Icon I really needed stuff and wanted to walk around and it was chilly out so I couldn't go for a walk.

I say you can go out, but don't let people touch DC or get too close to him. Lots of people go out even though they are sick and they don't think.

Re: Moms of winter babies

Congrats!!!
i have 2 winter babies & the dr told me 12 weeks-due to RSV that runs betw Nov-Apr.
My 1st son I was soooo careful-he didnt go anywhere-maybe to my parents once or twice in that time, and to the doctors office-that's it!
My 2nd I took out after 3 weeks (the weather wasnt to an extreme) I couldnt think of being in & hybrinating for an entire winter like I did w/my 1st...I was loosing my mind!
Wouldnt you know my 1st son wound up contracting RSV ....and my 2nd son hardly had a cold the 1st year!

Re: Moms of winter babies

DS was born in November and my doctor said not to take him to public places for 8 weeks. We took him out to family's houses, etc. though from the very beginning as long as nobody was sick, and just didn't let anyone touch him without washing their hands.
We take him out now all the time and just bundle him up.

Re: Moms of winter babies

Roman was born 01/28. His Dr. said not to take him to populated places until after 8 weeks. We would go for car rides or for a walk if it was mild even. I would go batty if I had to stay in for 4 monthsChat Icon

That's sounds a bit extreme especially since Roman started daycare at three monthsChat Icon

Re: Moms of winter babies

My ped said 2 months - and that is when we did her shots. I think that is why most doctors say atleast 8 weeks because then they have the protection of the immunizations.

We were out way before 8 weeks though! I think that our first trip out to dinner was at 5 weeks (but I knew the restaurant would be empty).

4 months is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. I allowed anyone to come see the boys the first days home and weeks afterwards. I take them out when i can.....however they were born in September, but i was walking with them in December.

My son was born Jan. 15th of this year. Dr. said he can go out for a carriage ride now,(above 40 degrees) but not to crowded places until he's 2 months.

Re: Moms of winter babies

We took our DS out within 10 days - no one we don't know is able to touch him yet though...

He is also BF so I am a little more laid back about it.

eta...Doctors in the UK do not make any recommendations as to when we can take our babies out and most British babies have lived to see the next generation!

My ped said after she gets her first shots between 6-8 weeks. Fresh air walks are good in good weather, but not to bring her around a lot of people, especially children.

DD is 5 weeks old. We've brought her to the ped's office several times and a couple restaurants during non-rush hours and that's it so far. I think we might head to a museum on Monday morning and maybe for a walk in Central Park. I'm going crazy.

Re: Moms of winter babies

Congrats!!

DD was born 12/1 and my doctor said I could go out right away as long as nobody touched her or got in her face. Keep her away from all kids. He told me it was fine to bring her to the mall, just keep her infant seat hood up and stand inbetween her and all people. She was out Xmas shopping with me at 2 weeks old!! He said take her out for walks if the weather is around 40 degrees or warmer.

I just never let others touch her and I never brought her to anyone's house where there were a lot of people (or any sick people.)

She went for her shots today and he did say that I should continue to keep her away from other children (esp those in daycare) until she's 4 months (since that's her second dose of shots) - maybe that's what your ped meant? Although even that's a stretch since she's starting daycare at 3 1/2 months.

Re: Moms of winter babies

Having my poor sick DD at home with RSV right now and not having gone anywhere, I would say Grandma's with lung conditions pose more of a threat then going outside. Chat Icon

Re: Moms of winter babies

My pedi said 2 months, and I contribute that to me being really depressed after Madeline was born. Unless he said 4 months for some specific reason ( premie, susceptibility to a disease), I'd be Ok taking him to like Target or something. Keep him away from sick kids as much as you can, but don't isolate yourself. I was completely miserable.
