Moms that buy organic - Money saving tips?
Where do you shop to save $$$$$. The only store near us is Whole Foods that carries enough organic stuff and we are spending close to $200 in whole foods per week 80% of which is for only DS! Then we buy stuff for us at king kullen too! Its the fruits and veggies that are killing me - he eats alot and they cost a ton! Where else can i go nearby in Nassau? TIA!

I am into saving money as well here are a few tips I have come to do. I shop using the circulars and coupons. After you have a good base you can buy only necesities but more of them with coupons and save a ton of money on average I save $100 week. With regards to organic veggies and fruits try going to your local supermarkets and seeing when they put the produce for quick sale out. I make all my baby food and that is what I use. It is cheaper and sweeter because it is quick sale.

I don't really buy organic BUT have you tried Fairway? They are in Plainview on Manetto Hill Road. They have great prices on produce and have a decent organic section of it. You will find that they have other organic items too that are prices very fairly.

Every year we join an organic farm co-op. It costs about $700 for a grocery bag full of organic veggies, herbs and fruit, enough to feed a family four for a week. The season lasts from May through November. In the long-run you end up saving a LOT of money on organic produce during those months.
I live in Philly but I know my mom is a member of an organic farm co-op out in Suffolk, so they do exist on LI.

Re: Moms that buy organic - Money saving tips?
I go to Wild by Nature (which is the organic offshoot of King Kullen). They have coupon books at their customer service desk, so I pick one up every time I go and use it for DS's purchases. I find organic fruit to be pricey, so I pick up whichever fruit is on sale for that particular week.
Also, I did a food coop last year (Golden Earthworm) and it was absolutely delicious! DS loved the sweet potatoes the most! They're based in Suffolk county, but they have drop off points in a bunch of areas in Nassau.

$700 for a family of four for a week, that seems very high so it costs $2,800 a month in groceries?

I am pretty sure she meant that she spends $700 for the season and each week gets a grocery bag full of produce. They also have half shares usually for $350 at most CSAs

Re: Moms that buy organic - Money saving tips?
First off I wouldn't shop at Wild By Nature... they are $$$. I would seek out Organic products at regular stores. Second I would join a CSA. I am not sure where you are but the two by me (Out east) go out west (Garden of Eve and Golden Earthworm). It's $500 for veggies and another $130 for fruit for a year or so. Then I would only get organic things that really matter like Strawberries or apples and not bananas. Good luck.

Re: Moms that buy organic - Money saving tips?
Thanks ladies! I've never heard of this co-op thing - I have to definitely look into it!
The problem is my local supermarket - King Kullen has a HORRIBLE organic section - I am lucky if they have one or two organic fruits/veggies per week and they are usually way over-ripe or already starting to rot. Fairway is about 25-30 min from me each way so that is too much for every week. I guess to save money I might have to start traveling a bit more to the further stores.
Does anyone know if Costco sells organic? TIA!

Hey ladies! Non mom stopping by, but there is also Dr. B Well Naturally. My brother owns it and it is all organic and he specializes in gluten free products. Here is the address: 8 Washington Ave Plainview, NY.
Hope that helps.
If you see Peter there, tell him Katie sent you

Re: Moms that buy organic - Money saving tips?
Stop and Shop has a pretty large selection of organic these days. Wild by Nature is a total rip off IMO. I was just there to get a supplement for DS and saw Kashi cereal bars for $4.50!!!! Those are $2.50 at Target and Walmart.

ITA!! Stop and Shop has their own organic line and the price is right.
And Summer's right Wild by Nature is a HUGE rip off. If I go there, I will be guaranteed to spend 2x as much as I would anywhere else.
