Moms that pump and bottle feed - how many oz. should a 2 week old be eating?
Since I am working on a final paper for grad school, we decided to feed DS pumped breast milk tonight so I can finish my work. We he downed 3 oz, then another 3 oz, then another 3 oz for a total of 9 oz... and he was still hungry after that. So my question is how many oz. did your 2-3 week old eat at once? He is pretty big - over 10 lbs - if that matters. Since I breastfeed him I have no clue how much he normally gets and I though that over 9 oz was a lot for such a young baby.

mine was a big boy, 9.8 at birth, he never drank that much a feeding, but he drank all day.
he would do maybe 2-3 ounces every hour. he was a sleeper though...eating always put him out.
there is no real gage with BF babies though. Maybe he just likes to eat more at night and pacifies more during the day>?

Maybe up his feeding to 4 ounces? He took 9 ounces at once?

Re: Moms that pump and bottle feed - how many oz. should a 2 week old be eating?
He just breastfed 2 hours before this too, for 15 minutes. I know he is still hungry because he put his whole fist in his mouth and was sucking and crying. I made DH take him in the basement to calm him down and it sounds like he has stopped crying. He is still feeding every 2-3 hours all day and night. I don't think I can keep up with this! My pediatrician suggest we supplement with formula at night and I was trying to hold off on that, but there seems to be no other way I can get a break. I will never be able to pump enough to feed him 9 oz x 12 times per day

I gave him 3 oz. to start. He was still hungry and crying, so I gave another 3 oz. He was still hungry after that so I got another 3 oz bottle thinking he would just have an oz or so, but he finished the whole thing and still wanted more. I told DH there is no way I am giving him more because that is just way too much. So it was 9 oz. over a time of about 30 minutes.

he might just be having a growth spurt right now.
Some days after eating all day, I swear it was every hour, I would still be completely full....other days, my boobs hung like gym socks!
does he spit up a lot?
if not, then he really isn't overeating...if he is spitting up, then he maybe eating too much.
have you tried a pacifier? on a seperate note...its FANTASTIC that he likes the bottle so much.

sounds like a lot to me, but Erik (3 weeks old) goes through eating binges where he'll BF off and on for hours!
When given a bottle of BM, I think 5oz is the most he's taken at once.
He's up every 1.5-2 hrs during the night to eat - its killing me!

Well at that age it's normal to eat every 2-3 hours around the clock. There is nothing wrong with supplementing with formula. You could always do 1/2 breastmilk 1/2 formula. I started giving my dd a formula bottle before bedtime because she was still waking every 3-4 hours at night and she was 5 months old. I just couldn't take it anymore!

Re: Moms that pump and bottle feed - how many oz. should a 2 week old be eating?
I was thinking a growth spurt also. I also think that maybe he just wanted to nurse from you but instead pacified himself with the bottle. Glad he took it though and gave you a rest!! DD was a very frequent eater but only ate a little at a time, she would usually fall asleep. I gave her a pacifier at about 6 weeks and it really helped. GL!

No, he barely spits up. When he burps a little dribbles out but it is almost nothing.
He doesn't like pacifiers, he spits them out. He doesn't really like the bottle either. The last time we tried he wouldn't take it. But tonight Dh kept trying and he finally started sucking.

Oh Julz, keep pushing the bottle, even if it's once a day. You definitely don't want him to refuse the bottle. I've been going through that for 7 months! She'll only take a bottle before bed and it's rarely more than 4 ounces so I still have to nurse her on top of that.

I will definitely keep giving him pumped milk in a bottle. If I don't there is no way I could ever leave the house! I have a dr. appointment and a few things to do tomorrow, so I will be bringing a bottle with me. But the problem now is I don't know how much to bring! 9 oz again?

Well how long are you going to be out? I'd bring a 6 ounce bottle and the great think about breastmilk is it lasts 4-6 hours unrefrigerated.

I agree, next time around a bottle will be forced daily. I did not realize the impact of it until it was too late.
Mine never took to the pacifier either.
totally sounds like he is just super hungry tonight...on a night when you need him not to be
I could not supplement because of allergies, but nothing is wrong with it.

Re: Moms that pump and bottle feed - how many oz. should a 2 week old be eating?
mine always ate so much less while we were out.
at home, I think they eat more out of boredom and its there...
when they are dressed and out...that seems to knock them out.
I HATE to say this....but nurse him in the car...keep that liquid gold for when you aren't with him. my pumped bottles were my ticket out. just a thought

Re: Moms that pump and bottle feed - how many oz. should a 2 week old be eating?
It also sounds to me like it is a mix of him being a big baby and having a growth spurt. I think around 10-14 days and then another at 6 weeks and then at 3 months are when they usually happen. Around that time DD also started to use me as a pacifer and she would take a real paci until 6 weeks. He could be looking for you just for comfort. Babies also have the natural reflex to suck so that could be why he has his fist in his mouth. I would try different brand Paci's too. I tried a few and then someone on here recommended the Avent ones. She took to them and once she got the hang of it I switched to Nuk orthodontic because it seemed like it would stay in mouth easier.
BF is definitly hard in the beginning but you will fall into a pattern and it will second nature.
For tomorrow I would bring a 6oz bottle like another poster suggested and you need more you can just nurse him. If you him to many bottles durning the day you then need to pump more to keep the supply up so that is something to keep in mind.

Re: Moms that pump and bottle feed - how many oz. should a 2 week old be eating?
Julie, You're positive he's still hungry? Maybe he's just looking to suckle? My DS is nowhere near 10 lbs but he usually still gives feeding cues after he's done nursing but he would stay at the breast all day if I let him. He just wants to suck. Fortunately, he takes a pacifier.
Regardless, hope you were able to get some work done.

Re: Moms that pump and bottle feed - how many oz. should a 2 week old be eating?
OK, so 2 hours later after the 9 oz he wanted to eat again. I breast fed him and I could hear his gulping the milk down, so I know he was really swallowing it and not just sucking for comfort. This must be a growth spurt. I hope to get some sleep tonight

Same here..........DS is 3 weeks today and as of last week, really took to the Avent pacifier.......so frequently that is what he is looking for!!
The most my DS takes in a pumped bottle is 2oz, but he was much smaller....so not sure if that has anything to do with it
