moms who had colicky babies please come in...

...and tell me i'm being totally irrational.....DS is a bit colicky, I hate that word, I prefer to call him 'spirited'! anyways, everyone kept telling me it would stop when he was 2 months....well, he is 10 weeks and still crying a lot....now i'm starting to worry that this is just the way he is going to be......I was so upset last night...blaming myself, maybe I was too stressed during the pregnancy, etc. He is eating well & sleeping good so I really shouldn't complain---I just feel like whenever he is awake and we could be interacting I am just trying to soothe him. Is he ever going to grow out of this or do I just have an unhappy babyChat Icon

My son was "spirited" until about 3.5 months. It varies from child to child. I wouldn't worry. My DS is now an extremely cool, happy and quite laidback little guy.

my 1st was colicky and she cried for like 3 months straight! It got better at 3 months and slowly but surely she turned into the happiest baby!!

My younger son was colicky until 6 months old! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Then, like a flip of a switch, turned into a happy-go-lucky easy child.

I am in the same boat as you.. DS will be 11 weeks tomorrow. he is eating/sleeping well (still has reflux though). But- when he is up, I feel like DH and I have to constantly "soothe" him. he rarely just "hangs out" without fussing or crying.
I thought it would be better by now, too. last night I was saying the same things you are, are we doing something wrong, I was highly emotional during my pregnancy too, and I was wondering if that is what caused this. But maybe some babies are just spirited ( I like that term) for a while!!!

Most babies who are colicky remain so until about 3 or 4 months of age. 2 months is about the time that this behavior tends to peak. Mine seemed to have stopped completely at 3.5 months, but now at 4 months he has had a couple episodes in the past week.

Don't blame yourself--I don't think anything you did or did not do during pregnancy is to blame. From what I've read, digestive issues or easy overstimulation are usually to blame. These babies also have a harder time comforting themselves, for whatever reason. So you did nothing wrongChat Icon

It is terrible, I know, and very hard to get through. But it usually does disappear around 3 or 4 months. Eventhough DS just had a couple episodes of this, I would say overall that he is a much happier baby these days--very different than he seemed at 2 months. At that point I was convinced he was a very sour, serious little guy. But he's not--he's kind of funny actually. So this isn't a sign of DCs personality to come.

Re: moms who had colicky babies please come in...

Another mom who had a colicy baby ... I feel for you Chat Icon DS is almost 18 months old now but I STILL remember those first few months and how awful it was having him cry the majority of the day. And I tell ya I cried right along with him most times too.. my poor DH had to deal with me calling him 3x a day telling him I didn't know how much more I could take of the constant incessant crying Chat Icon Chat Icon And I swore I would NEVER have another baby at the time (meanwhile we are TTC #2 Chat Icon)

My DS had bad reflux on top of just general colic and it really took him closer to 4 months to completely grow out of it (but I will say by the 12 week mark it got a lot better in general..)

Hang in there.. its easier said than done, I know, but your DC WILL grow out of this and you'll hardly remember how bad it was once you see the smiles and the coos and the real fun 'interaction' ...

My DS really became such an amazingly happy baby after those months and now he is just an incredibly fun, social, happy toddler.... it makes those first lousy months ALL worth it Chat Icon

edited to add: please do NOT blame yourself! Your baby being colicy is not a result of anything you did.. it's just the luck of the draw, some babies come out very 'spirited' and some are very calm..there is no way of predicting it and nothing that you did during pregnancy causes it.. (they sometimes call the first 3 months of a baby's life the '4th trimester' because they are still getting used to the world, they still wish they were safe and calm in mommy's belly and they just need some extra time to learn to adjust to life ..)
You are a great Mommy and I promise you in a month or so you will be giving advice to another new mommy of a colicy baby and telling them that it DOES get better too Chat IconChat Icon

First Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon DD was colicky in the beginning but then we realized it was reflux. The only advice i can offer is to relax, if your stressed then the baby will just pick up on it...believe me I know!!! Only know that it will get better as he gets older.

First, do NOT blame yourself or take it personally. i did that and it does no good b/c it is not your fault. i totally feel for your b/c DD was the same exact way and i blamed myself. there is nothing harder than a challenging newborn and listening to all that crying. i would cry too a lot and just pray it would stop. everyone kept saying it would end at 3 months so i counted the days-but really it didn't end until 4 months. when i was in the thick of it, it seemed like forever, but looking back it really went fast. we also discovered that DD had bad reflux and putting her on axid made a world of difference & that was at 4 months or so. wish we had known earlier! so my advice is to just hang in there and truly know that this will not be forever! this is not who your DS is-as he gets older and more independent you will see a happier baby emerge and you will appreciate it so much b/c you went thru a hard time in the beginning.
My DD is still "spirited" Chat Icon but is mostly happy and SOOOOO different from that little tiny screamer that she was!
all the best to you! you are a great mommy!Chat Icon
also, i wanted to add that this board really helped me thru that time. i posted just like you did a lot feeling hopeless and people's responses really gave me hope. looking back i realize how right everyone was when they said it would pass- and it did. i didn't believe my DD would ever calm down. oh and have you used an infant carrier or the bjorn at all? i found that this helped soothe DD and gave my arms a rest when she was really fussy and crying!

I know what you mean. My DH is great when he gets home and takes over the soothing, but he also doesn't understand that this is what I live with all day long when he is at work. I hope DS is better when I go back to work next month and my Mom will be watching him..

Same here. Just in time for me to head back to work and for DH to care for her during the day.
