Moms who have DC that had ear tubes put in
Hannah is finally getting them. She has the surgery this Friday. Can someone tell me what the procedure is? Do they get IV? How long? How are they after? Is it a pain when they drain? etc.
Tell me it will be ok - I'm starting to get really nervous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Moms who have DC that had ear tubes put in
well.. i had them done twice- when i was 5, and when i was 8... so i still remember it pretty well. not sure if they do an IV-- i think its just a gas anethesia ( i remember i got to pick a "scent" for the air i was breathing through the mask) i don't think its a long sugery- maybe 30 minutes?? its VERY common so the doctors know what they're doing. i DO remember that it made a HUGE difference with my hearing!! i remember coming home that day and standing in the kitchen and asking my parents " what is that sound?" it turned out to be the refridgerator running!! i had NEVER heard it before!! i'm a speech therapist now, so i also know how good hearing is SO important for speech developement. so you're doing the right thing, and he'll be fine!! good luck!!

When my DD had them (about a year or so ago), I was allowed to go in w/her to the operating room (from what I understand some hospitals don't allow this). She was put out w/what I believe was anesthesia through a mask. Unfortunately, I will never forget that smell. Once she was out, I was told to leave. I felt so bad because she just went limp in my arms - this is totally normal.
The surgery took maybe 20 - 30 minutes. The doctor came out and told us all went well. He warned me that she'd be totally out of it when she came through. Thank God he warned me becuase she was pretty upset. Once I gave her the binkie, she was great.
She had no side effects from the surgery other than being groggy.
Within an hour of recovery, we went home.
She's only had one ear infection since the surgery and it was cured with drops rather than antibiotics.
I too was very nervous but you'll be so glad you did it!
Good luck. FM me if you have any questions.

We basically had the same expereince with DD. She was only 9 months when she had it done. My DH went in the operating room with her until she was out then it was over in 20 minutes. She was a little upset in recovery but she was absolutely fine once we got home. As if nothing was done. We are so happy we did it. She had maybe 2 infections tops in the 2 years she had them in. The only time her ear drained pretty bad was when she had an infection. They never came out on their own so she had then removed in May and no problems since. Good luck!

I have a question for you, you mentioned you had them removed, I was never told this. I thought they'd fall out on their own. Should I be following up w/the ENT to have them removed?

Re: Moms who have DC that had ear tubes put in
My 8 Month old DD got hers this morning.
We had to show up at 7:30 at 8:30 I had her in her gown and met her surgery crew and they carried her back to her surgical suite at 9am and was only in till about 9:10 then headed to recovery. I was allowed in recovery by 9:15 She was on gas for only about 7 minutes and came out right away the nurses were trying to get her earrings back in before she woke but she woke up fast and pissy. She was hungry by 9:50 we were back in the car driving home. NO IV, gas through a mask and a tylenol supositiory
When my DS got his. He was 2.5 so it was a different ball game because he has adnoids taken out as well.

We were told that they usually fall out within 6 months to a year. My daughters never did. So her ENT said let's try to get through another winter with them. They were starting to loosen after 2 years. In May my DD got her tonsils and adenoids removed so the ENT just popped the tubes out while she was under to avoid another procedure. Most tubes fall out on their own and they are so tiny you may not even know it has happened. You shouldn't be worried.
