how did you get the dog to understand that the baby's toys are not his/hers? Yogi is stealing everything and it's driving me nuts!!! Chat Icon I've posted on the pets board but I don't get much response.

I buy double the toysChat Icon
I try to give Otis (Pug) one of his toys if I am playing with the baby on the floor.
So far so good. But then again my daughter is only three and half months old

Re: Mom's with dogs that steal your DC's toys

we had stopped with stuffed toys and squeaky toys for the dogs when i found out i was preg... but we also have the dogs gated out of the area where all the toys are and they are only allowed in when we are around... they listen very well and dont even touch his sippy when it falls... they know better...

i do think they got one toy from ds at the very beginning and dh scolded them and they learned real quick...

now if only that worked with the barkingChat Icon Chat Icon

I have yet to figure that out! We have the den gated but as soon as the gate opens Henry runs for the stuffed toys.

If the dog likes one particular toy I usually just give it to her, and make that her toy. We don't really have that issue with too many things though so I haven't had to really deal with it.

Re: Mom's with dogs that steal your DC's toys

in the beginning it was hard. He'd go after anything furry. So we learned to not give ds the elmo or cookie monster unless we were right there with them. Chat Icon

Jedi also loves little people. Yeah he eats them. Not good. So we make sure we're there watching. Before we leave the house, we walk around and jedi proof the toys. Chat Icon

But for the most part, he's pretty good. I just say "that's jacens toy" or "thats jedi's toy (to jacen)." Chat Icon They both steal eachothers toys.

So far, so good. My dogs were taught Leave it,a nd it seems to be working. They have stolen a stuffed toy or two, but how can they not? A toy that is stuffed and squeaky, can't blame them for thinking it's theirs. We also have a gate around DDs toys right now so we will see what happens in time.

Re: Mom's with dogs that steal your DC's toys

My dog is a "resource guarder." There are many google articles about it. In fact, I feel that he is often more difficult to manage than my toddler. There are some toys that he does not touch, surprisingly. There are some toys that we keep him away from totally. The gates in our house are more for him. We will be teaching my son not to fight to get something back from the dog. It is just safer that way. When the dog does take something, we use food to get him to drop it. He will trade anything for food. I used to think that I was rewarding him for taking something but a lot of dog behaviorists believe in this form of trade.

The worst is when I find baby toys outside because my 5 yr old let the dog out with toy in mouth!!Chat Icon Uggh.

No solution- some toys just become my dogs. The other day I caught him searching through the baby's toy box looking for something. Chat Icon My baby is two though and nolonger sticks everything in her mouth. Still....
