How do you keep DC out of the food dish??? She is attracted to the cat bowl like a magnet to the fridge!!! I'm always saying no sternly and tapping her hand as it goes into the bowl, but she just keeps going back for moreChat Icon

Re: Moms with pets

I try to only feed the dog when DD is distracted or sleeping.

Lately she really likes to "cook" his food in her play kitchen - put it on a plate and he eats it that way - he is a very forgiving dog though and NEVER territorial over his food - so their little arrangement works out for them.

Truth be told some days if she doesn't "cook" his food for him - he just doesn't eat!

Re: Moms with pets

Distance.....

When our cat was still around... Chat Icon We put her bowls up on a shelf that DS couldn't reach.

The dog's bowls are on the 1st floor, and we usually hang out on the 2nd floor. The dog gets plenty of snacks during the day, and access to his bowls several times a day, plus all night.

When we're downstairs, we just have to keep an eye on DD. DS is 4, so if he really wants to eat the dog food, that's his problem.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

My kitty only likes the hard food, so it's out in a bowl all day. The cat doesn't seem to mind DD around her food, its more me who doesn't want her taking handfuls of it thinking its Cheerios and eating it!!

I can't put it up high, because the cat isn't allow up on the furniture, counters, etc. (only beds and couches.)

The dog's food is downstairs and there is a gate so that makes it easy. The bowls are out of reach when the dog is not being fed so even if Jake does go downstairs, he doesn't get near them.

DS has been driving me crazy too with the dog food. He crawls a million miles just to touch it! Chat Icon
I have been putting the bowls down in the morning and keeping DS out of kitchen!! My poor little dog eats one kibble at time. Grabs one kibble runs into another room to eat and keeps doing this back and forth so she avoids DS.

I do the same. If I leave it their DS will eat the dog food Chat Icon (yet I can't get him to people food Chat Icon ) or he thinks the water bowl is a small pool for his toys.

I don't know.... Nate will call me and say "mommy, wash feet" as he sticks his foot in the water bowl and then says "my feet wet". Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Time out might be helping bc he doesn't do it as much.

Re: Moms with pets

We have the cats food in the bathroom so we'll close the door and if the cat has to go in there for food or to use his litter box then he'll hang around the door and that's our cue to let him in...

Right now DS is more interested in the water bowl. This kid loves playing with water.

Re: Moms with pets

My ds use to always kick over the dog bowls and then I would use to only put the food down when we were going some where or when ds was sleeping but he's 2.5yrs old now and thank god he must of gotten bored of it because now I can leave the dog bowl down all day and he won't touch it.

Re: Moms with pets

I just let him eat it Chat Icon

Seriously, I just put up a gate blocking off the kitchen. If he does go to the dishes, I pick up the water but don't make a big deal. If it's something he knows he can't have, he'll want it more. Now, he doesn't even go over to it. Or he'll pick up one piece of food then realize it's boring and put it down.

But, I'd be lying if I told you he never ate it. Chat Icon He didn't like it and spit it out. Chat Icon
