Moms with small (not young) babies...

Abby is not a big eater. Never was. She latched fine when I BF'd. She went back and forth from the breast to the bottle well. She is gaining weight consistently. She is almost 5 and a half months and even though we make 6 ounce bottles, it is rare that she finishes them - taking MAYBE 5 ounces at a shot if we are lucky. She doesnt cry out of hunger. She is not a cranky/kvetchy kid and she is pretty content. She sleeps and naps well too.

I am alwaysChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon at the thought that I could have created a child that is tiny and a small eater. Her pediatrician has not said ANYTHING is cause for alarm because she does gain weight. I never even ask for percentiles as if every kid did the same thing at the same time, we wouldnt HAVE percentiles. I guess SOMEbody's kid has to be little.

Im just Chat Icon that it is mine considering the history of female over eaters in my family. Then again I was long and lean as a little one - it took many years to balloon up to 260. the last thing I want is to pass on my horrible eating habits to my kids and have them in a position where they would need to do what I did to lose weight and be healthy.

We have her 5 month appointment on Monday so YES I do continue to ask if she is on target.

Anyone else have a petite little Miss or Mister?

my ds is pretty long, 95th percentile, but his weight is 50th. he looks very skinny to me ( he has a big head so taht adds weight) but his body is soooooo skinny. he is almost 5 mon and never took more than 6 ounces.I wish he would eat more to gain some weight, I don't want him to be too skinny. if he were a girl I would be fine with it, but I would rather him be a stocky boy!

Kaydyn is not petite -- at her 1 yr appt she is in the 75th percentile for height and 60th for weight but she is not a big eater. She has increasingly gone down in percentiles (she was in the 90th at her 2 month appt). We're lucky if she drinks a 6oz bottle. And if she does it usually takes an hour or two for her to finish it. She is a grazer. She will drink a couple of ozs then an hour later drink another couple. She's been this way since birth...I guess she got that from my DH b/c he is the same way.

DD is tiny, everyone always thinks she is six months when she is 9 1/2. She is in the 25th percentile for height and weight. She has been in the 25th percentile since my growth sono. The ped says she is perfectly fine just petite.

I have a little girl...5th percentile for height and below 5th for weight (20.5 lbs and 31ish inches (I think) at 22 months)...I'm not a small person and neither is my family. (Thin but 5'8"). My husband's family is shorter than mine though. My second DD seems to be on the same track as my first.

I do.

Christopher was exactly like Abby at her age. He was never a fan of the bottle, or formula. The most he took was 5-6oz, even at 10-11 months old.

When we switched him to table food at 11 months he did chunk up for a bit, but now, at 21 months he is back to being a peanut again.

It really does ebb and flow, but as long as the ped is not alarmed, I wouldn't be either. Plus I get use out of his clothesChat Icon

The twins are, were, always have been...tiny.

They followed their own growth curve...their smallness has never been a cause for concern. They've been measuring around the 5th percentile since the day they were born.

Now that they are 10 Im often concerned that they are going to go through puberty too early and remain extremely tiny...

Their peds assure me, my research assures me, that while they will never be tall, they are growing on the growth curve that God intended.

Their smallness makes no more sense to me than does Caden's largeness...KWIM?

Abbycadaby is growing perfectly fine...I couldnt believe how big she had gotten in the one month since I had seen her last!!!!

My son was BF, so I never knew how much he was getting, but he was never a really big eater! My DD never took more than a 6 oz bottle ever, and she'd go 4-5 hours between feedings.

Re: Moms with small (not young) babies...

DS is on the lower end at 19 mths old...we were told to put Carnation instant breakfast in his milk for added protein/calories and let me tell you the kid EATS ALL DAY

DD #1 is average to lower than average too...3 YO and 30 lbs and 37 inches. She goes back and forth with eating well/not eating well but as a baby she'd chow down!

5 oz at 5 mths I think is good

Re: Moms with small (not young) babies...

I have always battled my weight, always. But, both of my girls are thin. My oldest, is 11 and was 7 pounds at birth and now is only 73 pounds. She is petite but athletic and a good, healthy eater. My youngest is not as petite, but also shows absolutely no sign of weight issues.

As someone who completely understands weight issues, I thank God every day that my kids seem to have escaped it. I am convinced they take after my husband's side of the family. I never make weight an issue, only health. I also cook and eat healthy and have my "mind" if not my "weight" under control.

I worry about this for all young girls, especially when I hear my 11 year old talk about all the "diets" girls in middle school are talking about. For me, the best I can do is not make a big deal about weight, keep them active (even my little one plays basketball and lacross) and keep myself active (in the last year I started consistently working out and have lost some of my weight). But to be honest, I wish it wasn't such a huge (pardon the pun) issue for me.

That isn't little for 10 months. My DS is 21 months old and only 25lbs.

I think at 10 months my DS was like 17lbs or so.Chat Icon

I do!!!

Sophia weighed only 16 pounds at her nine month old appointment.

She rarely drank more than 8 oz at a time.

She eats itty bitty portions. She has to eat often though.

EXACTLY Kaydyn is still in some of her 6-9 month stuff that she has been in since Aug/Sept. It's awesome that I actually get quite a few wears out of each outfit rather than her wearing it once and then she's grown out of it.

eryk is in a 99th%, a month younger than your DD (but already roughly 28"), and eats quite well.... and he eats the same amount... I will admit he's skinny for his height... but since your DD is smaller than him, I think that amount is fine Chat Icon

Re: Moms with small (not young) babies...

Not sure why I clicked on this topic Leslie, but I am glad I did.

You know that DS was not petite. But, he only ate 3oz at a time until he was 10 months old. Many times we tried to get him to take bigger bottles, but only ended up wasting. So, our big guy ate out of tiny 4oz bottles for nearly the first year of his life. I'm not sure it was anything to do with who is being petite.

I do want to add that I think Abby is perfect.

My DS is 8 months and rarely takes more than 5 oz at a time. He dropped himself down to 4 bottles a day. I don't think he ever took much more than 20 oz a day. My ped never says anything either. He said he's gaining, growing and not complaining so it's fine. He's 90th for height and 50th for weight.

My DD (who's older) was always a HUGE eater. She always took 40oz a day even with 3 meals. Every kid is differentChat Icon

Re: Moms with small (not young) babies...

Abby is 50th percentile for weight and 80th for length. I had to ask DH because I never pay attention until or unless they say something is off. I just feel better off that way KWIM?
