money, financial aid, and jonesing to get back to school...
walk through the though process with me...
since getting my finances in better shape, i have just under $7k in an emergency fund. with the divorce, john signed the house over to me.
would i qualify for financial aid?
the reason i'm asking is... the program i want to do is at a community college. classes start in about two weeks.
my original plan was to save from now to january. but... i have enough money to pay for one or two classes right now. although i would only take one.
should i go for it or should i wait to see if all the paperwork of financial aid would be worth it?
i really want to get on with the rest of my life. but those i've shared it with have all told me to not be rash and just wait until january

Have you talked to the financial aid reps at the school? They may be able to help you figure that out by looking at your whole picture. You should try to schedule an appointmnent with them.

I think you might be too late for the financial aid paperwork to go through.
Couldn't hurt to call your school and see what the payment & registration deadlines are. Good luck!

that's not true. You can apply for FA even AFTER you start school... You just have to make sure the school knows your in the process of it.
You should qualify depending on your income. Since you are NOW a one income family, I don't see why you wouldn't be offered a healthy sum. It makes no difference how much you have in savings. (at least, I believe it doesn't, I could be wrong)
call your school's FA office and make an appointment

When I went back to school and applied for financial aid, I had to disclose my assets.
I have having a fairly good income but not enough to pay school out of pocket every semester.
You want to talk to a financial aid councelor at your school asap. It's best to be ready BEFORE the class begin. I did not want to advance the money for my classes. If you are all set with financial aid, it will be in the computer and when you register you won't have to pay for the classes.

Re: money, financial aid, and jonesing to get back to school...
the house might be an issue..your hubby signed it over to you..do you pay a mortgage on it, or is it paid for? when i was in college my parents owned a house. my father was the only one that worked. I got crap b/c they owned a house. My dad works for the city..his salary with overtime was maybe 60K at at the time. So they see 60K salary and a house and they think you make too much.
i had a private scholarship that paid full tuition to brooklyn college, and got a little bit from federal which sometimes covered my books. but that was it as far as federal aid.
I would STILL llook into it. b/c even if its too late now you might get something for the 2nd class you want to take next semester..or even get reimbursed for the class you're taking now.
doesnt hurt to talk to a finanacial aid counselor.

IMO, I'd keep my emergency fund and make an appointment with the FA department to get the ball rolling.

Re: money, financial aid, and jonesing to get back to school...
i like the way you guys think.
Peainapod - i might just go ahead and pay for the first class to get the ball rolling and see what they can do for next semester.
heathergirl - the money i'm using to pay for school isn't coming from my emergency fund. it's a separate savings.
ok, i have next friday off. i'll go to the college and see what we can do for this semester, if anything. and plan better for next semester.
i'm just so anxious to get on with my life

Re: money, financial aid, and jonesing to get back to school...
Been a while since I was in school but I do recall you had to be dirt poor to get most of the aid options. I recall a rule along the lines of a family of 4 had to make under $40k a year to get some NY state aid option
Even if you can't get aid you can probably do a payment plan.
Do you have a job that will part of your school costs?

I believe that in order to qualify for financial aid you have to take a certain amount of credits...which I believe is at least 12.
I would hop on it now though and start with the first class. Talk to a financial advisor in school, see if they can help you out.
Good luck!

No you don't. There are different loans depending if you are PT or FT students.
I was a PT studend and got through school with financial aid.

If your work pays for this, then I would wait for January without a doubt.

There is part-time financial aid but has to be 6 credits. I've never heard of qualifying for financial aid with only one class.

That makes sense. I know there was a minimum credit requirement you have to take. I always went FT so it was 12 credits.

I'd take one class this semester then to get back into the swing of things and then start for real in Jan.
This will also give you more time to get money together since you will probably have to pay for school and then have work pay you back once grades come in.
If work will cover some of the costs I'd take full advantage of that!
