Monitor debate

The sound just died on our Motorola monitor (apparently it's a common complaint). We had the monitor for over 3 years, and have 2 cameras - one for each dd. We just got the 2nd camera 2 mos. ago, but no longer have the box to return it.

We also have a very very old summer infant monitor that someone handed down to us. Awful picture but it works.

DH wants us to use the soundless monitor for dd1, as she's 3 and we can hear her anyways (we just like the picture to see if she's in/out of her bed), and the summer infant for dd2 (whos 2 months and will be going into her own room within weeks). I feel really uncomfortable with this and would like to invest the $250 or so in a monitor where I can see both rooms well. I'm the one who has the monitors on my nightstand and who checks them anyways. DH is oblivious once he's asleep.

Do you think I'm crazy for wanting to make the investment? I just feel like we barely bought any new gear for dd2, we won't need to buy clothes or anything so why not make this splurge if it means peace of mind. DH feels like it's $$ down the drain and we can make due with what we have. I see his point too...help!

If you feel more comfortable having a monitor that you can see and hear your 3 then get it.

However have you tried calling Motorola? They may sell replacement parts, possibly saving you some money.

I recently had this happen. Call motorola. They offered me a brand new one for about 1/2 price of a new one and it was for the newest model. I think it was about $120 for the whole system replaced. But I am not positive. I didn't do it and just had my dad tinker with it and fixed it with a weld.

I'm crazy.. LOL
My daughter will be 8 in August. We *STILL* use the SAME monitor she's had since birth. It never had video (we never cared for that). So we still get the sound. The display is spotty on one of the remotes and neither remote works off their cradle. But we have one in the kitchen and one in our room.

She's not allowed to turn it off and has only just begun to be allowed to turn it on (as in she's never been allowed to touch it or reach it). We have it on when she's in her room. Great for sleep overs too LOL. She knows we can hear her.

Re: Monitor debate

DH is calling Motorola later this week but the one-year warranty is way over so we're not confident it will be covered.

My kids are 7 and 3 and I still use a monitor for both. I have an audio only for the 7 yr old and a video monitor for the 3 yr old.

I never had a video monitor but I bought one for #3 (who hasn't arrived yet). I only bought it because my old audio monitor finally died after 5 years of straight use. That said, it was handed down from child to child, I stopped using any monitor at all for my oldest when she was two because I gave it to the baby. I don't really see a need for a monitor once they're not an infant but that's just me. We all sleep on the same floor and I can definitely hear them calling if they need me (or they can just get out of bed and walk into our room).

I justified the video monitor because it was hugely discounted and I said I can later put it in our basement playroom to monitor the kids once the baby isn't a baby anymore.

I'd check eBay or a fb buy sell group. I personally hardly used our monitor and it also broke. Probably won't get new one for the new baby. I hear them just fine without it.

Can I ask why anyone uses a monitor after they are babies? Never heard of that. I don't even think I used mine past a year or so.

I use my monitor and my dd is 3.5. I use it because my dd is a wild sleeper and I need to make sure shes not near the edge of the bed where the guardrail ends and she can fall out of bed. I go in to put her back up by her pillow. It happens often. Also I like to keep an eye on her through the night cause she gets up for water and I like to know shes ok.

And each mom has different comfort levels, if your fine without a monitor then good for you. Others arent. Why in the world are you NOT using one? Ive never even heard of that.

To the original poster: Call motorola. Then check FB, craigslist, ebay. I got my 2nd summer infant monitor off ebay for $60 including shipping. PERFECT condition.

If the picture works, but just not the sound, is it possible to keep using it and just get a cheap sound only monitor to add to her room,so you can hear her? We have a video monitor that doesn't have audio, and we also use an audio monitor that was probably about $30-40.

Because my DD, even at 7, will still call for us in the middle of the night if she needs something or isn't feeling well and I can't really hear her without it when I'm sleeping. Same goes for my son who is 3. Plus, if we're in the den at night and they are in bed I can't always hear them either when we have the TV on.

Honestly, I'd rather have them call for us and stay in their rooms all night then wander around the house when they need something. I find it so much easier and I don't plan on getting rid of the monitors anytime soon.

Yup. She never leaves her room. She stays put. Imagine that for the cosleeper child. LOL

Besides, I know when she's coughing in the middle of the night or sneezing even if it doesn't wake her up. So my hubby and I can know if she's getting sick.

When she has sleep overs we know when the girls finally fall asleep or if they are up talking or need something again without leaving the room.

I can't imagine not having it.

I send her to her room to read RAZ Kids on the ipad. I can hear her. Once she moved over to Netflix and I yelled over "AJ, RAZ!" and she knew she got caught. It wasn't a demand so she wasn't in trouble or anything. We got a laugh out of her trying to sneak out of reading for a bit.

I hear all. LOL

Plus she likes it. She'll call over "Hey Daddy, can you bring me my medicine?" Or "Um, Daddy, Mama?" yes AJ? "I just want to say I love you" and when she has her friends over "Ok you guys you ready for the fashion show?" hahaha

We love our monitor!

I never had a video monitor so to me it would be a waste of money. At 22 months, I barely use the audio monitor.

I was in the same situation after DS2 was born when we moved him into his room , the extra camera was broke. we got a whole new one.

DS 1 is 3, DS 2 is 8 months. I prefer to be able to see and hear him. I think it gives him comfort also.

Is her mattress very far from the floor? I just ask as the first night in the new bed, and many nights after that, my child has fallen out of the bed and they were fine. I would hear it, they would get up and just go back to sleep.

I can see if you are very far away. My children always just got up, mostly my oldest, went to the bathroom, got a drink, whatever, since they were 3.

we used our video monitor for my oldest to about 3 years old. My 4 year old still has one but for medical reasons. I know alot of people who still use it for the 5/6/7 years olds (for sleeping only). I think it gives us peace of mind to be able to touch a button and check on them.....and I think that is ok. Do what you are comfortable with

We use it as more of an intercom at this point. Kids are 4 and 7. Sometimes when they call for us at night it is easier to just talk to them through the monitor.

I'll have no problem removing the camera once they want privacy, but for now, they both like being able to talk to us through it.
