Monoamniotic twin pregnancy (UPDATE!!)

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of or had any experience with this type of twin pregnancy. I had my first sonogram yesterday at 7 weeks and was told that it looks like I have this extremely rare condition. Identical twins should have a thin membrane separating them but they couldn't see that on my sonogram. It is extremely risky because if they are swimming around together it is highly likely they will get tangled in each other's cords. They also told me that it is still early and I am being sent to a specialist who has a better machine with higher resolution because they just might not be able to see it yet. I am so worried over this and cannot find any comfort in anything I've read on this condition. I also read that if this is diagnosed before 12 weeks it may just be too early to see.... Does anyone know of anything about monoamniotic twin pregnancy??? TIA!

UPDATE:
GREAT NEWS!!
Hi,
You are looking at two pictures. The one on top shows TWO separate sacs, which means that the babies are separated by the membrane!!!

They are both growing nicely and their little hearts were beating away. They are laying head to head. We are so relieved! Everything looks great!

Thank you all so much for your positive vibes and well wishes!!

**I tried the image resizer but it won't work...Sorry!!

Re: Monoamniotic twin pregnancy

It took them a couple weeks to find the membrane btn them. The sono tech found it, but I was around week 10 or later (I can't remember). You might be visiting a high risk dr early on. But wait the membrane may appear.

Re: Monoamniotic twin pregnancy

Did they throw this condition out to either of you??? If it is common not to see the membrane that early..why do you think they told me about this?? Are they just being cautious?

Re: Monoamniotic twin pregnancy

First congrats on a twin pregnancy!

They thought I was this as well at week 8, but the membrane showed up at my 10 weeks sonogram so hang in there. They did mention that it could be either a mono/mono or mono/di pregnancy (which i had no idea what that meant at the time). They are probably just warning you of the chances of it being such a pregnancy.

Good Article to Read
This is an organization that was created for mom's dealing with this

Right now it seems like it might be a little early to see the membrane so hold out hope that they will the next time. Even at my 10 week appt they said it was very faint. And if you do have this type of twin pregnancy stay positive and listen to that article that advocates agressive treatment from doctors.

If you need anythign please don't hesitate to FM me. While i did not have a mono/mono twin pregnancy, my boys did share the same placenta and my pregnancy was considered high risk. Chat Icon

I have no advice just to say that the mommies on this board are very knowledgeable as we've all had differences in our twin pregnancies.

It is still too early and they will probably find the membrane in the next few weeks.

Re: Monoamniotic twin pregnancy

The Dr. did warn me of the risk but also said he isn't going to show concern until further along in the pg. It took 2 or 3 more sonos to see it, and it was very subtle when they did. Try not to worry yet...
Also, they first time we didn't see it, there was a women in the office who did carry monoamniotic and had 2 healthy little girls. The doctor told me about her so I would stay calm! I hope that helps...hang in there!Chat Icon

Re: Monoamniotic twin pregnancy

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for the prayers, well wishes, and FMs. I will be seeing a specialist today at Stony Brook University's Maternal Fetal Medicine at 1:15p.m. They have a high resolution sonogram machine so hopefully I can get a better idea of the chances of this being a monoamniotic twin pregnancy. I will keep you updated on my situation!! Thanks again!!

Does anyone know of anything about monoamniotic twin pregnancy??? TIA!

I saw the specialist yesterday and he even said that he believes it is still too early to tell if there is a membrane although he believes that he might see something on the sonogram that is the membrane. He also said something about there being two yolk sacs and that could be an indication of a di amniotic pregnancy. I'm not sure what that means. I will be going back to get another sonogram in two weeks. Thank you again for all of your well wishes and support!
