Most of the stuff on the beach are motels...there's no chains or anything

Montauk Hotels....
Royal Atlantic - it is nothing fancy by a long shot, but clean, great location, and the rooms have a little kitchenette

I don't think anything out there is fancy to be honest. They renovated a few of the usual dumps and now they charge like $900 a night in the high season for those. The others are 1960s dumps for like $400 a night. It's insanity.

Montauk Hotels....
We love the Beachcomber. We’ve stayed there 3 years in a row, same week, and there were so many of the same families that we see every year. It’s like a reunion. It has private beach access right across the street.
We stayed at Atlantic Terrace one year, and while it was nice to be directly on the beach, the rooms were a dump. We would never go back there.

Atlantic Terrace and Montauk Blue would be my choices. But, I think the hotels are insanely priced for what they are out there!

I don't get the appeal of Montauk personally. I stayed out there several years ago and was SO disappointed with the motel that we paid top dollar for. I don't know if we just didn't know where to go but there didn't seem to be anything to do out there.
I know people love it so maybe it's just not my type of vacation.

Montauk is nice if you are a big beach person but IMO only for a few days. I can't spend a week out there, there's really not much to do for more than a few days. It's nice and relaxing and beachy, but again I can only do that for a few days. BUT my biggest issue out there is the hotels. I am a hotel snob and I can't stay in a dump. And I especially can't stay in a dump when I am paying the price I would pay to stay at the Ritz anywhere else. I know they renovated a few, but those are now like $800 and up a NIGHT in the summer and I'm not sure how great they even are. I just can't do it.

You might be better off trying to rent a house if you're a hotel snob. The houses are way nicer than the motels.
My opinion is obviously going to be different because my parents bought a house out there when I was 6 and I spent every summer there, but Montauk is the best. It's been a little ruined by people, but it's still my little piece of heaven and I can't wait to go out at the end of August for a week.
But I do agree you have to be a big beach person, we spend 6-8 hours a day at the beach.

I agree with this. We actually went camping at Hither Hills last year, and I said it was the best $35 a night "hotel" we had. I would never pay the prices for what the hotels are out there. Plus there is like NOTHING to do in Montauk other than the beach. So if it rains, you are screwed.

We spent a week out there every summer from the time I was like 8 until I was a teen too so I do get it . I have a lot of great memories from out there and I am a total beach person so I do get the appeal. Unfortunately while i can spend 8 hours at the beach, easily, DH gets antsy after a few hours so it's not ideal for us personally for more than a few days. It's funny though because as much as I loved it out there as a kid, I still remember thinking what a dump the hotel was back in the 80s and even back then it was expensive for the time for what it was. I agree, a house would probably be a much better option.

This would be my pick too. We stayed here last year for a few days while we attended a wedding Montauk and I happened to really like it. It's a great location - within walking distance to everything and right on the beach (the Atlantic side, not the sound). We had an oceanfront room and it was nothing special, but it was clean and waking up to the sound of the ocean and being able to sit out on the balcony and be basically ON the beach was very nice. It has its own restaurant and a tiki/beach bar that plays music. One night we walked the beach and walked right over to a bar (forget the name) that was on the water.
Right next door to Royal Atlantic is the Montauk Blue Hotel, which is similar - I think slightly nicer rooms, but no restaurant or beach bar. I preferred the Royal Atlantic, but both are nice.

Re: Montauk Hotels....
Looks like the Atlantic Terrace was bought and is now called the Marram and was supposed to open to guests this summer- not sure if it did yet. Looks like they renovated. Bring on the $900 a night price tag now!

if you're looking for overpriced luxury - gurneys. our room was nothing special and we went in the off season, but lots of amenities.
gurneys also bought the montauk yacht club so they have a property on the harbor too
we also stayed at the surf club in september which was off season at the time. im not sre of the prices now
a few years back we stayed in napague which is right outside montauk at windward shores - could be an option, but youd have to drive into town. it is right on the beach

Sun and Sound. It's on the sound side, and the beach is a 3 minute walk. My family has been staying there since I was a kid. We love it

We stayed at the Surf club, right on the beach. This was 9 years ago though, it was a very nice place then.
