Moon Sand for a toddler..good idea or bad??

My DS loved loved loved to play in the sand when we were on vacation. Yes, i know he will make a big mess, but I wonder if he would love squishing and playing with it on a rainy day we are stuck in side?

ANyone get it for a little one? Or should I wait until he is much older?

Everyone I know that has Moonsand hates it with a passion. It's still messy.

It's a no-go in our house.

We have moon sand and love it. They play with it in a huge foil tin and it isn't very messy.

I have a LARGE area of tile that I was going to lay a plastic tablecloth on, and let him play there so it would be easy to clean

The more mess, the more fun, thats my motto!!! LOL

Kids learn a lot form messy stuff....I have made it a point to not be one of those parents that does not allow paint playdough and all that fun stuff. They will learn to mess but also to CLEAN UP too!!!

I've never heard of moon sand before so of course I did a google search on it and came up with this:

Recipe for homemade moon sand (1 batch)

6 cups of play sand (I got a 50lb bag from Lowes, it was $4.99 plus tax)

3 cups of cornstarch (most dollar stores carry it for $1 per box...you'll need around 24 boxes for the whole 50lbs!)

1 1/2 cups of cold water

Step one: Mix the water and cornstarch together thoroughly, this will take a few minutes to get it nice and smooth.

Step two: Gradually mix in the sand, one cup at a time. You'll need to really work it in with your fingers.

Step three: Play with it!

Step four: When you're all done, pop it in an airtight container.

Step five: When you next play with it, you'll need to revive it with 2-3 tablespoons of water. Just sprinkle it over and work it in.

That's all there is to it. Very cheap, very easy and the kids will get to play with heaps of the stuff. Play sand also comes in different colors, so buy different colored bags to mix things up a little. Have fun!

Re: Moon Sand for a toddler..good idea or bad??

I would totally but it and let DS play with it.. I feel like if he likes it it's okay to make a little mess..

And its not like I'm going to let him use it on the rug or anything.. just keep it on the kitchen table..

That tablecloth idea is a good one.

Just keep it out of reach and it will be even more special when he does get to play with it.

You could let him play with it in the tub (without water of course) Chat Icon
