More speech therapy questions here please...

How old was your DC when you started?

What was your DC's speech like when you started, how many words?

When did you start to see improvement?

How many words can they say now?

Did you feel their behavior changed as well (for the better I hope)?

Thanks IA. My DS just started and I'm curious as to when I can start to see some positive changes. I know every child is different. He is 23 months old and can only say mamma, dadda, baba (for bottle), uh-oh, bella, lily, duh-duh when he tries to say thank you - I guess that shouldn't count. Other than that it's a lot of mumble.

How old was your DC when you started?
DC started last October (he was about 21 months)

What was your DC's speech like when you started, how many words? He had a lot of babble. I think just said Mama & Dada

When did you start to see improvement?
Believe it or not, within the past few months. The new therapist is sooo much better! Much more structured! I probably should have changed therapists last year around the holidays, but, I was hopeful it would get better and it really didn't.

How many words can they say now?
He picks up a new word everyday. Yesterday he started saying "Play". Tomorrow may be something else.

Did you feel their behavior changed as well (for the better I hope)?
We never really had behavioral problems. He'd whine if he wanted something. We just say "Use your words" and if he tries, he'll get it (like a snack or a toy he can't reach).

Re: More speech therapy questions here please...

He was about 19 months when he started therapy.

Only really said "Dada"

At 27 months he has about 70 words. Everyday he is saying new things. I would say at 2 years old is when I started to see a real improvement.

His behavior changed in that he is able to tell me what he wants/needs more easily now. He does still have major tantrums - which I attribute to the Terrible 2s (and still not being able to communicate as much as he would like to)

I will say this, I just switched therapists this week, after many months. He was not clicking at all with the first one - and literally each session was torture for him. I don't know if I give her credit for his word explosion, or if it's something that just happened with age.

My son was 16 months when he started.

He had no words at all until 18 months, when he said "more" once. Then nothing again until 24 months when he started making animal sounds, and jumped to around 50 single words. At 27 months he started to string 2 words together. Now, 34 months, he can speak in full sentences.

His behavior has improved so much! I literally could not take him anywhere when we started. I would end up in tears. He still has his moments now, but for the most part he is great.

It takes time, but it really does work! Chat Icon

Re: More speech therapy questions here please...

How old was your DC when you started? 19 Months

What was your DC's speech like when you started, how many words? Only some babble....No mama, no Dada, just some ahhh and ohhhs, no words at all except for nana which he called his pacifier consistently.

When did you start to see improvement? Around 23 months he started saying mama, dada, more, door...and animal sounds

How many words can they say now? He is almost 28 months now and says a lot of words, but his issue is poor muscle tone so he has trouble forming a complete word, so we often get just the beginning of the word " dow" instead of down for ex...and people still have trouble understanding him but his Speech therapist counts it all as words and he probably has at least 50 words now..And new ones come every day and they are much more spontaneous...He never used to say a word till prompted and begged...Now today I asked him which cup he wanted and he said "blue" and pointed to the blue cup...First time ever saying blue...and so it's coming on its own now.

Did you feel their behavior changed as well (for the better I hope)?

Well he has always been very receptive, so he is amazing at telling you what he wants without too many words...almost too good b/c it makes him lazy with talking. He can pantomine you a whole story Chat Icon .....but yes some of the frustration is gone, he is so proud when he is able to say something and he tries much harder and mostly its just the ability to communicate more that helps with a lot of the tantrums etc that used to occur.

Re: More speech therapy questions here please...

Thanks again for your replies.

As far as my son's behavior at the moment my DS gets very upset when he tries to communicate and can't. He gets really REALLY upset. He throws himself on the floor, gets all sweaty and red and tenses up big time. I think this is why he's not able to handle the nursery school program I have him in for two year olds. I have to say in his defense the children in that class are almost three!! I gave it a try but it's not working out. I'm just going to stick with his speech therapy at home and hope to see an improvement as soon as I possibly can.

***Not sure for those of you that already posted in this thread will read this again but I do have one more question...do you have your DC in any school type program??? If yes, is your DC doing alright? It was too much for DS so I'm going to have to wait.

Jack just started a program this year. He goes 2 days a week - for 2 hours each day. He's having more of an issue with separation from me, than anything else. Normally, he's a social little butterfly but I guess he's used to me always being there.

You should talk to your therapist - there are also groups and classes offered through EI that you can take your son to. On Mondays Jack goes to this speech class (which I love) it's structured the same as a nursery class. It's only an hour, and I am there with him. It's a slow separation class. I have also done a complete separation class at Hofstra.

Def. worth looking into!

This shounds great. Monday will work for us too. I just hope they offer something like this I will mention this to the therapist this week. I like the idea that it's just an hour (I hope in the morning) and I can be with him. I think with my son it was a combination of me leaving and new surrounding. For example I've always changed his diaper last week he did #2 during his long lound tantrum and he would not let anyone near him to change him. They called me to come change him. I just went there to pick him up and bring him home. It was too much he looked horrible with all blotches on his face from screaming and hair soaking wet.

Awww! I know, believe me! I leave listening to my son scream, and I hide in the parking lot to make sure he's ok when he goes into the playground. I can't even enjoy these two hours yet because I am so worried about him. I am hoping it gets easier. I am giving him until Christmas time though, because I do know it takes a long time to get used to it.

If it's not right for your son now, you can always try again in a year....they are still so young!

ETA: Do you live in Nassau or Suffolk? I know they have groups at Adelphi, Hofstra, and the one we are attending now is in Merrick. If you don't want a class type setting, they also have other classes available. I know my friend took her son to a speech based gym/sports class. HTH!

I'm in suffolk north shore. I'll talk to the speech therapist on Tues and hope she might have some place for me to check out. Thank you!! I don't think I want to leave anywhere alone yet but the 1 hour with me there sounds good. It's so hard now but I know he'll get there.

He def. will get there! She may have you call your coordinator, but I would def. mention it to her on Tuesday and she can recommend some places in Suffolk for you to talk to your coordinator about!

Re: More speech therapy questions here please...

Noah goes to speech based
Pre school in Merrick through Early intervention....He loves it and the teachers are special Ed...and its small class sizes etc.

EI has a lot to offer in that dept yes. We had SOOO many to choose from. A lot of the kids in the last "semester" were closer to 3 but it made no impact on Noah really...Now all the 3 yr olds are not there ( EI is only till 3 before it switches to school district )

Eta- how old is your son again?

I tried a 2 y/o program last year, my son didn't take to it at all. I continued with mommy and me, started a separation class in January, and sent him to camp in July. He did really well. No separation anxiety at all. Now he is attending preschool.

I've kept him at the same school the whole time. I wasn't going to but it just worked out that way, and now I think it was for the best. He's comfortable there, so it hasn't been a huge adjustment for him.

Re: More speech therapy questions here please...

DS is 21 months and was just approved. He should probably start speech in a week or so, but I don't have much feedback on the therapy yet.

He has picked up a few words though, just since I called for the evaluation and now. When I called a month ago, he was just saying Mama Dada and Nana. Now he says hot, bump, dirt (where does he get these words)?, and hi. So it's progress. He also seems to understand even more than he did just a month ago, and has a few new gestures. So overall, he is better able to communicate with us and I have noticed, fewer tantrums, throwing things, bumping his head against the wall.

We have really tried to do a lot of the things our evaluators suggested on a regular basis, so maybe this is helping? Or maybe he just got older, don't know, but yes, his tantrums are better.

He is not yet 2, and is not enrolled in a preschool. I am looking for work and don't know where/when I'll be working yet, so I'm waiting to decide about enrolling him in a program. But we do a Mommy and Me, a music program, and a playgroup once a week, so he has some contact with other kids. I am there all the time though.
